We were lucky to catch up with the English teacher, content creator and entrepreneur, Alma Flores recently, also known as “La Teacher Alma” in social media, and have shared our conversation below.
Alma, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When I was a student, English was my favorite subject, I remember, I used to help my friends with their homework, some of them told me that I was really good at explaining the topics, at the time, becoming a teacher never crossed my mind, but when I grew up, I realized how much I wanted to help others in their process of becoming bilingual, sharing my knowledge and experience with my students and watching them accomplish their goals it’s my favorite part of my job.
I have a bachelor degree in Arts in English Language Teaching and a Certification as an ESL (English as a second language) Teacher, I started my career teaching in different institutes, I even had my own English school.
However, due to the covid situation, I had to close my school, that was a devastating moment, but, I couldn’t let that stop me from doing what I love the most, so, I decided to teach English online, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough students, the situation was difficult for everybody at that time.
I had too much free time, so, I started creating content on Tik Tok, at first, it was just for fun, then, I realized how much I enjoyed doing it, so, I continued filming more and more videos, suddenly, my account started growing, that was when I decided to open my other accounts, instagram, facebook and twitter and without even realizing, it became a full time job, people from different countries contacted me to learn English with me, some brands wanted to partnership and even some other content creators wanted to collaborate with me, it was really unexpected for me, it was like a dream came true.
Currently, I teach English online and create content with the intention to help people around the world speak English, I truly believe that English can change people’s lives bringing them better job opportunities and I love having the chance of being part of their learning process.
Alma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an English teacher and content creator, I started my career teaching English face to face, in different language institutes, I even had my own school, however, due to the pandemic situation, I had to move my business into the digital platforms.
I teach English online, promote educational brands on my social media and create digital content on Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram and soon I will be on youtube too.
My main goal is to help people around the world, speak foreign languages, currently, English and hopefully I will be teaching Spanish soon, with the intention to provide my students with tools that bring them better job opportunities.
Many students ask me for help because they are able to understand English, but they can’t speak the language, due to the lack of practice that some schools provide, which focus their lessons only on teaching grammar, that is why my methodology is different, I provide my students with practice opportunities every class, this way when they finish the program they are not only able to pass a certification exam, they are really able to use the language in a real social context, some of my students are working abroad, working remotely or just traveling and meeting people from different cultures just because they crossed the language barrier, I am really proud of them and I am really proud of being part of that achievement.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I think we should never stop learning, learning is the best way to keep ourselves updated, I try to learn something new every day, this way I am always able to provide my students with valuable content.
I love reading books related to marketing, sales and business management, one book that has significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking is “Rich dad, poor dad” by Robert Kiyosaki, I really admire him, the way he expresses himself in that book really changed my mindset, I totally recommend it.
Some other books that have impacted my philosophy are “The seven habits of highly effective people” by Stephen Covey, “The four agreements” by Miguel Ruiz, “The secrets of the millionaire mind” by Harv Eker, “Mindcode, the science of getting the brain to buy” by Jürgen Klaric among others.
I also watch educational content creators every day, on the internet, especially marketing experts, entrepreneurs and of course I learn from other English teachers who create content on their social media.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have been creating my audience by being honest and providing valuable content, people search for creators who are real and provide them with solutions to different problems we all face in life.
The best advice I could share with those just starting to build their social media presence, would be to be real, show you the way you are and share with your audience valuable content, quantity and consistency are also important but quality is even more important, so be persistent, keep yourself real and always bet for good quality.
