We were lucky to catch up with Alma recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I created NSR in the summer of 2018 because I truly loved discovering new music and sharing it with anyone who would listen. As it developed and started gaining traction, I realized that it wasn’t just a passion project anymore – NSR had truly become my life. Having built such a close relationship with the independent artist community and seeing how unbalanced the music industry could be when determining which artists succeeded and don’t, I wanted to build a platform that supported growing artists who’s passions spoke through their amazing music. In both the music magazines and artist development packages, NSR is meant to bridge the gap between artist and viewer. Whether that is connecting with people through their music or translating their brand, NSR is determined to bring support so that every artist has a chance at success.

Alma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alma and I am a proud Puerto Rican creative, A&R, social media manager and founder of music magazine and consulting agency, Natural Soul Rhythm. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Business and Marketing and Songwriting in 2020!
I started building Natural Soul Rhythm in the summer of 2018. After I graduated I was really struggling to get a job in the industry. I was constantly being told I ‘didn’t have enough experience’. So instead of giving up, I went and got the experience for myself, which led to my self-employment. I learn something new (& am consistently humbled) every day. Keeping a strict schedule and mindset is one of the most important skillsets I’ve had to learn to manage my day to day and stay on top of my goals. It’s through those lessons that I have been able to manage various client contracts in different fields.
One of my biggest moments of pride was with my artist and client Mia Taylor (@whosmiataylor). I remember when she first came to me with the idea of building a tropical brand for herself. With the addition of her wonderful creative strategist Zorah Hall, not only did we manage to build that brand and image for her through development and content strategy, she was able to later represent Trinidad and Tobago in Nike’s 2022 West Indies Campaign. It was because of the vibrant and colorful branding and marketing that sealed the deal!
The thing about me is that I am a true believer in attention to detail in all things. I take my job and my responsibility to my clients very seriously. My most memorable moments are when my clients, both in music and other businesses, find success through my efforts. But my proudest moment is building my own success from scratch, and never giving up. It’s so easy to allow some bad days to make you want to quit. It’s harder to keep going and push through all that. I always press myself to go harder and do better and learn more skills that will help me and my clients. I stay consistent, organized and passionate so that I always show up ready to work at 110%. No matter what, my clients will always have me in their corner.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There was a time in my career where I had an extremely humbling moment that almost made me quit and drop my business, Natural Soul Rhythm. After that experience I took an entire year off. I refused to even talk about the company. I worked a retail job, and was later introduced into freelance social media management. I started getting that creative itch again to build something that was mine. I finally sat down with one of my best friends and wrote out all my goals for NSR and ways that I could achieve them. That later led to a rebrand plan which then led to me taking my second leap of faith and diving back into things. I redesigned the entire structure of my company (including my leadership style) and really studied other business plans. That was only a year ago and I know I still have a lot of work to do. But things are starting to fall into place.
I’m not gonna say it’s been easy. I’m not even gonna pretend that it’s a walk in the park now. There are still challenges and fears I need to overcome. But I am just so excited to be able to create again. It’s been such an incredible journey so far.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m actually currently re-building my audience now. I can give you my secret tip that I always give my artist development clients. You imagine your desired target audience as if they were a person. You picture their gender, physical appearances, etc. Then you get into the details. What kind of tv shows would they watch? What about music or fashion or food? Are they conservative or totally gone with the wind type? What are their dreams and fears?
Pictures your target audience as real people vs. just names on a screen not only helps you properly research what kind of content will draw them in, but it will also really get you thinking outside the box in terms of how you can connect with them human to human!
