We were lucky to catch up with Allyson Fronk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Allyson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of my most meaningful projects to date was having my fabric wedding signage featured in a styled wedding shoot in Lake Como, Italy. I created a hand painted welcome sign and matching seating chart, both of which I did the sewing myself. I had never made a fabric piece quite as big as that seating chart before, so it was an artistic challenge for me that yielded beautiful results. I was also incredibly excited to have my work featured at the stunning Villa Pizzo on Lake Como. The shoot that Bella Vita Retreats put together was well curated and every vendor contribution added to the romantic feel of the shoot.
I also branched out into mural painting this past year. I did multiple murals for my church, Hilliard Christian Assembly, in the new space that we acquired last fall. I loved creating a custom design that reflects our vision as a church and the physical work of painting on a large scale. Seeing my art in our church home every week is also a wonderful feeling!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always had a passion for artistic lettering – I’ve been doodling my favorite book and movie quotes in my school notebooks for as long as I can remember. When I discovered the art of hand lettering in 2018, I was totally hooked on creating my own word artwork! Since then, I have found a variety of ways to use my calligraphy, hand lettering, and illustration as a business by including my designs on various products, but in 2021 I officially started a new venture by launching The Pemberley Creative. My main focus is day of wedding signage – seating charts, welcome signs, place cards, menu boards, table numbers, and more. I love being able to contribute to a small part of a couple’s wedding day by combining functional signage with beautiful and unique designs that elevate their wedding décor. In addition to wedding projects, I am also passionate about creating custom designs for local businesses as well. For all of my work, I love the process of making a design and transferring it to a variety of signage surfaces, from chalkboards, to mirrors, and even fabric. I love coming up with new ways to make a functional sign – like a seating chart – creative and beautiful while still sharing the relevant information.
One of my top goals as a calligrapher is to cater to the unique needs of each of my clients – all of the pieces I create are custom works of art designed specifically for you. Since all of my work is hand lettered, I’m not limited by a specific font or the requirements of a machine to make the client’s vision a reality. Hand lettering brings out the character of a piece, and no two designs are exactly alike. I also love incorporating simple illustrations that really make a design stand out from a basic printed design.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Without a doubt, networking has been one of the most effective ways to grow my business. Specifically, connecting with other wedding vendors and local businesses has made the biggest impact in sharing my services with a larger audience. Making a personal connection with another vendor increases the likelihood that they will recommend my services to others, as well as share and interact with my social media content. I am so thankful for all of the great connections I have made with local businesses in the Columbus, Ohio area, and love spreading the word about vendors I recommend as well.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There’s nothing better than seeing another person enjoy my art! I can sit in my own home and design and letter pieces for myself all day long, but the true satisfaction comes from sharing my work and and seeing the excitement and joy it brings to others. Positive feedback from satisfied clients is even better, knowing that I rose to the challenge of meeting their expectations.
