We were lucky to catch up with Allyson Caire recently and have shared our conversation below.
Allyson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve wanted to pursue a creative career for as long as I can remember. My mom recently found a drawing I did around age 6 showing that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. I always loved to draw and paint and took art classes throughout school.
I took an artistic break for a few years but still continued a creative career path in advertising and public relations – an industry I decided on during a 7th grade career project. After working at Houston-area marketing agencies for nearly a decade, I left that full-time career to pursue my art “hobby” more seriously while freelancing in public relations/marketing on the side. And now I’ve had careers as both an artist and freelancer for the last six years!

Allyson, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an abstract artist based in Houston, and I use color and movement to create vibrant mixed media paintings. Inspired by geology and nature, my paintings are usually acrylic and ink on wood panels. I’ve recently started painting some small paper pieces which has been fun. I love painting BIG, especially if they are custom commissions. Working with clients to make a custom piece for their home or office is very rewarding.
I paint and exhibit work in my studio space at Winter Street Studios in Sawyer Yards. You can visit me at my studio during Second Saturday open studios every month or by appointment.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support artists and creatives in your community! It doesn’t matter if you don’t know anything about art or can’t invest in artwork right now. There are many ways to engage with artists – whether you want to follow them online, attend art events or add to your collection.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting to see where my artwork lives after it goes home with someone is very rewarding. I love to see how people enjoy my paintings and display them in their homes or offices.
