Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allyson Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Allyson, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was there is no right way to do anything in life . I moved to Atlanta knowing I had to unlearn to relearn. Everything I was taught since birth, didn’t make all the sense as I got older. In a new state, 700 miles away from my hometown, it posed so much stress and anxiety on me and my mental, but I was resilient, I was determined, I had a purpose when I came to Georgia.
I had one family member and one friend I was familiar with once settled. I went everywhere from nightlife, mom life, single woman life, black woman life, etc. I was determined to build a support system and village for my children. I had to unlearn that everybody is evil and don’t want to help you. I have ran into a few manipulators and scammers, but overall, the village of people I networked with became my family. Although its not the same, my new family adds value to my life because of the hard work they see me put in. Now I am able to present an idea and I can now call on reliable people to make it happen for our family or our community.
Its so hard to trust people when you’ve been heartbroken, but having faith and trusting your gut will help you make better decisions.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The story that I will forever tell is giving birth to my son in my bathtub. I gave birth to my son Christopher Pierce-Lee on July 19th, 2019. The morning of birth I was approximately 39 weeks and I went through the entire pregnancy sick and very weak. I didn’t have contractions until the day of. I woke up out of my sleep around 3am to use the restroom. While in the bathroom, contractions came out of nowhere and was unbearable. Now, my daughter is three at the time so its been a while since I gave birth, but I don’t recall that much pain. I never had an epidural, but at this time, I was calling for one.
I ran the bath water as I wanted to go to sleep because I was restless, sick and the water soothed the contractions perfectly so I stayed and fell asleep. I woke up around 430 am to use the restroom again, but this time every time I stepped out of the tub, the contractions were super painful. I called my doctor and they told me to come in for a checkup. I just went to the doctor the day before and declined them checking my cervix because my daughter was with me and she couldn’t stay if they admitted me so I wanted it to be a surprised.
Well, surprise! I called my mom and told her to come pick up my daughter while the childrens’ dad finished packing the bag. By the time my mom came, she noticed I wasn’t dressed nor was I ready to get out of the tub. She told me to get up and not to have the baby in the tub. Haha, I tried crawling out of the tub and as soon as I made it to the floor, my water broke, so I climbed back in the tub.
I called my childrens’ dad in the bathroom yelling, ‘Get this baby out of me! Come get your baby!!” My mom called 911 and started panicking, not knowing what to do lol. I pushed and pushed and my son came out to his dad and the paramedics were right on my side in the nick of time. Once my son came out, my childrens’ dad handed the baby to the paramedics and the umbilical cord snapped. I instantly went into a hyperventilating shock that caused me to have an outer body experience. I was able to see everyone moving and helping in their respectful manner. My childrens’ dad was in the bedroom helping find towels for the paramedics to wipe my son off and check his vitals. My mom was outside with my daughter talking on the phone telling family members I just had the baby. I saw neighbors peeking through their windows as they saw the fire trucks and ambulances outside.
I ended up coming out of it and when I did, no one knew what I just experienced, they even stated they didn’t see me shaking profusely even though it was a paramedic in the bathroom that never left my side. I stood up and they asked me if I needed a stretcher or could I walk, I tried walking and almost fell on my face. As I was stretched out of the house unto the fire truck, I asked them where my son was and the whole time he was on my chest breastfeeding. I had no idea I was back in reality.
I got to the hospital and was greeted with love like I was some kind of celebrity because they told me its been years since they made a run on a home birth visit! I get to my room, the nurses took my son to bathe him and check his vitals again and it turned out my moms best friend who was my moms nurse back when I was born was the one doing the same thing to my son. I had a moment and was very grateful I was taken care of so well. I ended up having to get stitches because I damaged myself badly after pushing my son and before I was able to get the numbing anesthesia, I started hyperventilating and shaking again and crying sporadically. I deal with pain well and silently, but this time my body was taken over by some sort of entity that I couldn’t control, but everyone in the room told me I was fine and I wasn’t moving.
I still can’t understand what really happened to me other than God. I was able to meet him, talk to him and he spoke over my life. In several dreams he would come vividly, especially after prayers and once I wake, they would be answered, fast! My resilience comes from the strength I accepted and prayed for. Although I still stress often, I have to remind myself of healthy thinking. Once I control my thoughts, I can control how my body feels and react. My son has definitely re-birthed me and I now understand my purpose.
