We recently connected with Allison Welsh and have shared our conversation below.
Allison, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Starting in 2023, I was able to dive head first into my business full time! When I started it was more of a side hobby, but as I took time to invest in my education and experience, I started gaining more clients who admired my work and wanted to book with me.
I went from weekends, to part-time with the help of my supportive hubby and from there just by word of mouth from my amazing clients, I HAD to go full time in order to keep up with everyone! It sure is a blessing I’m very thankful for.
Allison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a travel/destination wedding photographer and I travel out of state frequently for weddings each year! My home base is near Flint, MI but I’m always out an about somewhere meeting up with clients! I also offer a few other services, including studio photography with off camera flashes.
I invest in my studio education frequently with Professional Photographers of America, to create better images for my clients!
Along with those, I also offer family, seniors and boudoir.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
100% word of mouth. Connecting with my clients and making sure I go out of my way for each individual client has been really what’s done it for me. If I make sure everything goes how my clients want it to go, they refer me to their friends and their friends refer me to their friends and so on. Word of mouth from your previous clients is really everything. Also, I hate to say it but, social media! It’s so hard to get to the “public” without a social media page branding to your wanted clientele. Posting frequently and keeping up on trends to stay on top is definitely a job in itself!
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Any wedding client of mine that books a wedding with me, FORVER gets 10% off future bookings as a friends and family discount! After spending the whole day with you on the best most intimate day of your life, I definitely think in turn that means we are definitely friends now ❤️ Since I’m out of state frequently capturing weddings, and I have so many clients that reach out to me from out of state and fly into Michigan to have their weddings, whenever I’m in a state where a previous bride and groom is located, I’ll offer a free session if they can get to where I’m staying!
I absolutely love every single one of my clients!
