We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Minutillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
We’ve been sold a lie: that readiness is a prerequisite for action.
We’re conditioned to believe that confidence must come first—that we have to feel ready before we step up, speak out, or lead. But science and experience tell us the opposite: action breeds confidence, not the other way around.
In the marketing agency world, and I believe across much of Corporate America, what we get wrong is our relentless pursuit of “the perfect plan” and the ingrained pressure to constantly climb the corporate ladder. We operate under the assumption that success is a linear path, meticulously plotted, and that any deviation or perceived “step backward” is a failure. This mindset directly feeds the myth of readiness, perpetuating the idea that you must have every single detail figured out, every contingency planned for, before you can make a significant move.
I’ve always considered owning my own business. The idea was always there, a flicker in the back of my mind. But I was always too scared to do it. There were too many “but what ifs?” Too many “now’s not the right time” excuses. The truth is, there was always going to be a roadblock, always a reason to wait. I live my life on YOLO terms (You Only Live Once), taking calculated risks and embracing spontaneity in my personal life. Yet, when it came to business, I felt this overwhelming need for a perfect plan, an infallible strategy. I listened to society’s drumbeat of “climb the corporate ladder.” So I did.
And when I finally reached the top, as President of my agency, I didn’t like the view. The air was thin, and I no longer knew who I was. The person who had chased that pinnacle felt disconnected from the person I truly wanted to be. The irony wasn’t lost on me: I had achieved what so many strive for, only to realize it didn’t serve me.
This illustrates why Corporate America’s obsession with a rigid, upward trajectory matters so much. It stifles innovation, discourages true self-discovery, and traps talented individuals in roles that no longer align with their purpose. It creates an environment where people wait for the “perfect scenario” or “the right timing”—a waiting game that often lasts a lifetime.
Instead of waiting for that elusive perfect scenario, I took the leap. I started taking steps backward from the traditional corporate path. In March 2025, I finally left the agency world I loved so much but that no longer served me. I launched my own woman-owned business called Maestra. That designation, “woman-owned,” means a significant amount to me, seeing it attached to my name, signifying not just ownership, but a reclamation of identity and purpose.
My story isn’t about criticizing the corporate world entirely; it’s about highlighting a pervasive flaw in its operating system: the belief that you must be perfectly ready and constantly climbing. The truth is, sometimes moving forward means taking a step in a different direction, or even a perceived step backward, to ultimately propel yourself toward something truly meaningful.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those who may not have read about me before, I’m Allison Minutillo, and I’ve built my career in the dynamic world of marketing and leadership. I bring a blend of strategic thinking, authentic leadership, and a passion for helping individuals and organizations unlock their full potential.
My journey into this industry began with a strong academic foundation, earning a B.S. in Marketing from Penn State University. I spent nearly two decades in the agency world, working my way up through various roles. I was President and COO of Rebel Interactive Group, where I helped lead the agency to significant growth, even earning a spot on the Inc. 5000 list for three consecutive years. Later, I joined Primacy and became Chief Marketing Officer. Throughout my agency career, I was deeply involved in defining and executing multi-channel marketing strategies for a diverse range of clients across various industries, including consumer, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and higher education. I also had the opportunity to create and host the “Rebel Leadership® Podcast,” where I explored different aspects of leadership, challenging and inspiring others.
Today, I’ve founded Maestra (maestramethod.com), a strategic workshop and marketing consultancy. Through Maestra, I provide:
Strategic Workshops: These are designed to help organizations and individuals gain clarity, define their direction, and create actionable plans.
Fractional Consulting (CMO, COO, CSO, or Chief of Staff): I offer expertise in developing and implementing comprehensive marketing strategies, helping clients navigate the complexities of multi-channel campaigns. Leveraging my experience as a leader, I work with individuals and teams to cultivate effective leadership styles and positive, problem-solving cultures.
Keynote Speaking: I engage audiences with dynamic and authentic talks on leadership, marketing, and organizational strategy, often focusing on themes of embracing discomfort, challenging conventional wisdom, and fostering a “progress over perfection” mindset.
I solve problems for clients by cutting through complexity while aligning and energizing teams to act. My focus is always on tangible results, ensuring that marketing efforts translate into measurable business growth.
What sets me apart is my dynamic and authentic approach to leadership and strategy. I don’t just provide theoretical frameworks; I bring real-world, hands-on experience from leading successful agencies and working with a wide range of clients. My ability to blend strategic prowess with a high emotional intelligence (EQ) allows me to not only develop strong plans but also to inspire and motivate the people who will execute them. I’m known for being fearless, for challenging the status quo, and for encouraging a culture where progress is valued over perfection.
I am most proud of taking the leap to launch Maestra. After a successful career climbing the corporate ladder, reaching the position of President at an agency, I realized that the traditional path no longer served me. It was a moment of profound self-discovery, where I chose to redefine what success looked like for me personally. Stepping away from a comfortable, high-level corporate role to build something entirely my own, especially with the designation of Maestra as a woman-owned business, fills me with immense pride. It was a testament to my belief in embracing discomfort and taking action, even when not feeling ready.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Hands down? My authenticity. I always say that my greatest strength and, at times, my Achilles’ heel, is that there is only one version of me. What you see is truly what you get. I am the same person whether I’m meeting someone new, talking with my husband, sharing laughs with my best friends, engaging with my kids, collaborating with clients, brainstorming with peers, or confiding in trusted advisors.
When I find myself in a situation that calls for me to be a different person, to put on an act or conform to an expectation that doesn’t align with who I am, I reject it. In those moments, it’s a “fight or flight” response—I simply can’t operate outside of my true self.
This unwavering authenticity manifests in every aspect of my work. It’s how I show up for my clients and my teams when no one is watching, just as much as it’s evident when I’m on a big stage, leading company-wide meetings. They can see the consistent leader, the consistent partner, and the consistent person in our one-on-one discussions and in public forums. This consistency builds trust and fosters genuine connections, which I believe are the bedrock of any strong reputation.
This aspect of my reputation is extremely important to preserve because it’s what makes me, me. It’s the foundation of my brand, Maestra, and it’s how I connect with people on a deeper level, offering real solutions and genuine partnership. It’s not just about what I do, but how I do it—with integrity and an unshakeable commitment to being true to myself.

Have you ever had to pivot?
My journey has been marked by two significant pivot points, each driven by a deep internal call to growth and self-actualization. These weren’t just shifts in job titles or companies; they were profound redirections of my career and life, guided by intuition and a willingness to bet on myself.
The first major pivot happened almost a decade ago when I decided to leave my former agency. I knew, deep down, that I was capable of more when it came to leadership. There was an itch I needed to scratch, a desire to apply my skills and vision in a more impactful way. This meant taking a calculated risk: I actually took two steps backward in my position (from AVP to Director) and accepted a significant pay cut at the time. I was trusting entirely in the vision of the owner, Bryn Tindall, who would eventually become my business partner.
Essentially, I was betting on myself and my gut. My intuition was screaming that I could grow and apply my experience more effectively in the setting at Rebel Interactive (now The Rebellion Group) than where I was. This wasn’t a slow climb; I went from Director of Social Media to President & COO almost overnight. The trust I placed in that decision, and in Bryn, paid off in spades. Within the first three years, I had the incredible opportunity to lead the agency alongside him to triple in size, securing a spot on Inc. 5000’s Fastest Growing Companies list three years. It was a period of immense growth, learning, and proving to myself that listening to that inner voice was paramount.
The next pivot point, and arguably the most transformative, came when I knew it was time to leave the agency world altogether. After years of pouring my effort, hustle, and heart into building other agencies, I heard that voice inside me begging me to take the ultimate risk: start my own business.
This was more than just a career change; it was a complete life realignment. We moved to Madison, CT, a place that felt like home, just a mile from the beach. It was my dream home, with my dream family and friends, and now, finally, a business I could call my own: Maestra (maestramethod.com). This wasn’t just a professional venture; it was deeply personal. It meant I could channel all that passion, dedication, and strategic thinking into something that was truly mine, nurturing it with the same intensity I had previously given to others. This pivot was about integrating my personal aspirations with my professional ambitions, creating a life where every aspect felt aligned and authentic.
I still can’t wipe the smile off my face.
