We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Matlock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Hi Allison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Currently, my focus is on a series of works called Mycotypes. Mycotypes are a photographic process using the sun’s UV rays, pressed flowers, and dye made from mushrooms. I apply these dyes to natural fibers such as cotton, paper, or linen. Whether through painting, immersion dyeing, or other techniques, I strive to create compositions that reflect the organic beauty of the natural world.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My inspiration for creating Mycotypes stems from a deep appreciation and curiosity for the natural world and its remarkable capabilities. Nature’s simplicity often holds profound depths, and I find myself drawn to expressing this through my art.
Science has played a pivotal role in guiding my artistic process. Learning about the intricate workings of the natural world, particularly Mycology among other natural studies, inspired me to experiment and innovate within the realm of this photographic process. Mycotypes, for me, represent a harmonious marriage of art and science, where each image is not just a visual capture but also a testament to the wonders of the natural world and the creative potential inherent within it.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The journey of creating art is a continuous process of learning and discovery. Delving into the depths of the complexities of nature inevitably leads to profound insights about myself. Each piece of art I create becomes a mirror reflecting not only the world around me but also the inner workings of my own mind and soul.
This journey of self-discovery through art is incredibly enriching and fulfilling. It fosters personal growth, deepens my understanding of the world, and ultimately allows me to express myself authentically through my creations. It’s a constant cycle of inspiration, exploration, and self-reflection that continues to fuel my passion for creativity and makes every moment spent creating truly rewarding.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Looking back on my creative journey, one of the most valuable lessons I wish I had learned earlier is that success as an artist isn’t defined by the fanciness of your materials or the size of your canvas. It’s about finding contentment in your decisions and being satisfied with the outcome of your projects, regardless of whether they translate into financial gain.
For me, success is about the joy and fulfillment I derive from the creative process itself, rather than the monetary rewards it may or may not bring. I’ve come to realize that I don’t need extravagant paints, canvases, or brushes to create meaningful art. Instead, I’ve embraced a minimalist approach, working with simple tools and utilizing unconventional materials like scrap wood and natural dyes.
This journey has taught me that true creativity knows no bounds and that limitations can often spark the greatest innovation. By simplifying my artistic process and focusing on the essence of my craft, I’ve been able to tap into a deeper level of creativity and produce work that resonates with both myself and others.
