We were lucky to catch up with Allison Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Allison, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I first started making pennants, I was going to work during the day as an elementary PE teacher. I would come home, spend time with my family, and then after I put my son to bed I would break out the felt, scissors, and sewing machine. All of the cutting and sewing got done in the evening hours, which is how we came up with the name Eventide, meaning evening time. When the sun went down, the pennants came out!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It all got started when I was awaiting the arrival of my first child, Hewitt. When trying to think of a way to document and measure his monthly growth during his first year, a name pennant came to mind. After creating a pennant for her son, I began creating them for friends and friends of friends, etc. until finally Eventide Pennant Co was founded in 2019.
In the beginning, in 2019, I was creating pennants in the evenings after I was done for the day with my full time day-job as an elementary PE teacher. Now I juggle EPC while being at home with 2 of my 3 kids. Safe to say, pennants still get made in the evenings! However, over the past 3 years, EPC has gained a handful of employees and a studio space that help streamline the production process!
Our Name Pennants come with in three different handlettered options. The first font we created was the block font. The cursive, modeled after modern calligraphy, came along in 2020, and the freestyle font, which is a fun and whimsical font that plays with negative space within the name, was designed in 2021. Each name is a handlettered original!
In addition to offering Name Pennants, we also provide different products to help customers celebrate life’s milestone – big and small! We created a monthly milestone mini pennant for parents to place next to their little infant for monthly photos. We also now carry a celebration calendar, celebratory banners, big brother & little brother t-shirts, as well as seasonal decor items to celebrate throughout the year!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
A social media presence has served as a key point of access to customers for Eventide Pennant Co. Not only do I get to share our products directly, but I also get to learn from our customers and future customers. Social media has also been super helpful for creating a network of small business owners to bounce ideas off of and to collaborate with. I’ve constantly been reevaluating a balance between product specific marketing and sharing behind the scenes of business and mom-life.
My advice for someone just starting out: take notes on the social media presence of brands that you respect and appreciate. Try to weave in those certain things into your own presence (i.e. how much they share their own life, their attitude toward customers, their attitude towards their competition, etc).
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been social media. Between getting to make personal connections with people (hi, it’s me behind the phone on our account!) and seeing past customers rave about the products they’ve ordered from us, there are new friends headed to our shop via instagram every day! The connections that are made via social media are so unique and valuable. It’s truly amazing that I can chat with someone. answer any questions they have involving EPC, walk them through our products, and even help them figure out which colors to land on for their pennants/buntings/banners.
We’re so grateful to all of our past customers who have shared our products on social media!
