We recently connected with Allison Leah and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Allison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My new single, “Sunsets” (Released March 29, 2024) is an incredibly meaningful project. It’s an indie-folk single about losing someone you have given your all to. Even though the relationship was built on giving to their needs, you’re the one who needs them after all. The song has fingerpicked guitars, feathery vocals, and a lush, atmospheric soundscape to create a song you will be thinking about for days to come.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a folk-pop artist based in Nashville, Tennessee.
I was raised in the suburbs of NYC and that’s where I fell in love with music, creativity, and songwriting. I grew up in an extremely musical family – my dad is a music engineer and I can recall singing, writing, and being creative in his studio from the time I was four years old.
When I was eight, an agent heard me singing at a holiday party and asked if I would be interested in singing in jingles. So, I began working as a jingle-singer at eight years old and recorded familiar jingles like the “Hess Truck” Commercial, GE spots, and radio tags for Z-100, among others.
I also was passionate for musical theater and all of these childhood experiences served as a huge inspirations for me.
For the last ten years, I’ve been writing heartfelt folk-pop songs. I write about love, heartbreak, coming-of-age, and the human experience. I want my music to allow the listener to get to know me better, and in the best case, to get to know themselves a little better too.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I write music for myself and I release it for others. The most rewarding aspect of releasing music is getting to meet the people that find my music, both online and in person. When someone feels “seen” because of something I’ve created… it’s just mind blowing and my biggest dream come true. I am constantly in conversations with listeners and there is no greater joy.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Quite often, when I tell people that I have a college degree in media and marketing, people are confused. I use my degree every single day. I think there is a huge misconception about what it means to be an independent artist.
As an artist and creative you wear so many hats. Yes, I write music, record it, play guitar, piano and sing, but I also run my own social media, design my website, read contracts, write emails, book venues, manage my tour schedule, fill out applications, design graphics, create content, the list is endless.
Getting the chance to take on so many roles is one of my favorite aspects of being an independent artist. I’ve been able to meet many incredible people and stay excited, continue learning, and there’s truly never a dull moment.
