We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Klucaric Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started making my own natural cleaning products in 2012 after the birth of my first child. He loved to be held and I would often wear him in a baby carrier while I would clean. I started to worry about the chemicals I was exposing him to while cleaning and I quickly realized most of the common household cleaners I had been using were full of highly toxic chemicals. I started trying out different recipes and over time I narrowed down and perfected my favorites. In 2019 I decided to turn my love for natural cleaning and environmentalism into a business. I wanted to make it easier for busy moms to have access to truly natural, zero waste products that they could trust.

Allison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Greener Clean Designs is a truly purpose driven business. I will always choose people and planet over profit. I am dedicated to leaving the planet better than I found it. Each item is eco-friendly, cruelty free and zero waste. I carefully choose our ingredient and packaging suppliers. We choose packaging that is free from plastic every step of the way right down to the shipping tape that we use to ship customer orders. We are Leaping Bunny certified and we ensure that animal testing does not take place during any part of our production process. We are also a proud member of 1% for the Planet and we donate at least 1% of our annual revenue to environmentally focused non profits to ensure that we are doing everything in our power to preserve the planet for future generations. We operate primarily as an e-commerce business but we also have refill stations available to our customers. Many of our cleaning products can be refilled at local brick and mortar stores that we have partnered with and also monthly at local outdoor markets that we attend. This allows our customers to refill their products without creating additional waste. We also organize multiple community clean up events throughout the year. These are fun events where we pick up litter at beaches, parks and waterways within the Lake Erie watershed.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We started out selling on Etsy and we still do to this day. We also sell on our own site which was built for us by a dear friend. We chose to branch out onto our own site as our business grew. The personal website allows us to share more about our business with our customers and it also allows us to connect with wholesalers and small businesses who would like to carry our products in their store. Etsy provides us with a solid flow of traffic and these customers often return and shop with us on our personal website.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes, each of our products is handmade. I already knew how to manufacture most of our products before starting the business but I had to learn how to streamline things along the way. When I first started out I would typically be making products in extremely small batches and I often found myself overwhelmed when I would receive multiple orders at once. Over the years I have found ways to bulk produce and store my products so that I can keep up with higher demand for my items.
