Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allison Doty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Allison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I am one of the few pet taxidermists in the country. Most taxidermists only work with hunted animals while I specialize in pet memorials. It’s is very out of the norm but I believe It to be a very needed service. Helping people process the grief of losing their beloved pet.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into this business on a whim. I had been interested in taxidermy and found a school in Florida. I knew nothing at all before going to school. I have spent countless hours learning, expanding my education, and competing in taxidermy competitions to perfect my craft. My brand consists of mostly pet taxidermy, snakes, and oddities.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
If you think you are the best, then you are not. Be humble. Art is not about being better than anyone but continuing to be better than you were previously. I would encourage everyone to make art, any kind. Art is very subjective and it’s supposed to make you feel something. So even if people hate It, it’s still serving its purpose! Always keep pushing your limits!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had to work really hard and pay a lot of attention to detail to get where I am. I have been told that I “know nothing about taxidermy, that t what I do isn’t “art”. I’ve heard It all. On the other side, I also hear from every customer how I am such a blessing to their life for doing what I do. That my compassion has helped them tremendously to process their grief. For the last 4 years, I have worked in a shed with no water and very little electric. I have still succeeded and built a business. I had to be resilient and resourceful. Now I am currently moving into a commercial workshop and showroom with a pet funeral parlor as well. Keep going!
