We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Carrillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.
Allison, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner has always been a dream to achieve. I do find more happiness, and fullfillment in pursing my dreams of creativity. As an artist it isn’t always a smooth road but a learning experience. I don’t spend much time thinking about what it would be like to have a “regular” job. In the beginning, there will be times you will take free work to start getting your name out there while working a full/part time job to be able to pay bills at the same time, tons of assisting, imposter syndrome, difficult clients, and learning how to network. Building relationships with industry friends help you get the best advice, and mentors to learn from.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a licensed and specializing in makeup and lashes together for 7 years. I always loved all things beauty and growing up I was fascinated in enhancing everyones feature flawlessly. After attending cosmetology school, and earning my full license. I started working full time at a salon as an assistant and freelancing with wedding teams. This lead into me into expanding my skills and techniques, leading me to specialize in makeup artistry, lash extensions, and all things brows. Shortly I started booking my own clients and growing my artistry portfolio. My passion is to create a luxury service and experience for all clientele. As an artist I am constantly looking for ways to improve my techniques to provide camera ready looks, and taking continuous courses each year to stay up to date with trends and sanitation.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building relationships with industry friends can help you get the best advice, and mentors to learn from. Honesty, focus, passion and communication is what I believe helped to build my reputation within the industry. Being open to change and adjustments is a must to be able to grow, and knowing that there is always room to learn from others. Network, network, network.. definitely get your name out there, you never know who will be looking or needing your services.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media is huge and definitely take advantage of it. Make sure to have a presence on social media, this allows exposure for your business. Lots of people love to see progress, even if you’re a beginner, post about it. Along with referrals, most of my clients have found my business through social media. Consistency is key, it can be overwhelming at first, but take it one day at a time. Only post quality content on your page, this will create a beautiful aesthetic for your page and it will be eye catching to your potential clientele. Lastly, remember to take breaks from social media, this will help from feeling burnt out.
