We recently connected with Allison Brost and have shared our conversation below.
Allison, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Writing a book. In 2018 I unexpectedly lost my infant son and through the healing process, I found myself turning towards writing. Through the encouragement of family and friends I started a blog the following year and since then have shared daily encouragement online for those journeying in their faith at “This Side of Perfect.” It’s been a challenging but extremely rewarding journey to be able to write and share hope for others in their own dark times.

Allison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a child I always enjoyed singing and writing and for years served on our church’s worship team, beginning all the way back in children’s choir up until today where I often lead Sunday morning services.
It was after losing my son, Solomon, unexpectedly in 2018 that I felt God really lead me into sharing songs and writing online. What began as a healing journey for myself to process grief led me into releasing my first single in 2020 called “Above All”, a song that was actually sung at his funeral.
In 2019, I began writing and sharing online at my blog page called “This Side of Perfect.” It’s a space for people to be connected with other believers and encouraged in the truth that no matter what they’re going through, God is with them. This led to releasing my very first book in 2023 where I share my own story of hope and healing in the book, “This Side of Perfect: Holding Onto Hope When LIfe Gets Hard.”
Shortly after its release I found myself in talks with a publisher who was interested in working with me on a book about gratitude. Just before this I had done a month-long campaign on the power of gratitude–a trait I felt wholly lacking on in the throes of grief–and the publisher had actually gone on my page during this time and suggested this as a fitting topic. No one could be more surprised than me!
But this has been exactly the healing that my own heart needed as I’ve walked through the heavy and mundane moments of life, and a trait I believe so many of us need to be reminded of.
It’s my goal that my writing would meet people in their day-to-day lives, constantly pointing back to the truth of scripture and the hope that no matter what they’re facing, God is with them.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I know social media can get a bad wrap, but I think it can be such a powerful tool to connect with others. It’s been really inspiring for me to be able to connect with others and realize that I’m not alone on this journey–whether growing as an artist or in the throes of healing from grief.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m in a season where I’m just coming off the busyness of writing and releasing my second book “Grateful” and all the extra tasks and to-do’s that entails. It’s been very exciting and rewarding, yet it also comes with its own set of challenges. Namely, the question that both myself and others have been asking–what comes next?
And yet this is what I’ve kept coming back to both personally and professionally: the next right thing is obedience. As a believer, I get to live in the assurance that God is leading my steps and that my singular purpose is simply to follow Him…. in the big, the small, the everyday, just in it all.
This gives purpose to my small, meaning in the mundane, and confidence even when it seems like things aren’t coming together in the way or timing that I’d been hoping.
So this is my goal, both creatively and personally, to follow Jesus and point others to do the same.
