We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alli Miller-Fisher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alli below.
Alright, Alli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
“If you can do anything else in the world and be happy…do that.” This was quoted on my first day of college at Ball State University as a Musical Theatre Major, and at 18 I was like….Ummmm no nothing. Done. This is it. Fast forward to now and I still feel the same…mostly. What I think wasn’t fully explained then was to also find what PART of the entertainment industry made you the most happy. I describe myself as an entertainment Hat Rack because I love performing, writing, producing, directing, managing, choreographing, etc etc etc. If it’s mildly creative I wanna do it. This sometimes works against me I think as those that just wanted to do ONE thing focused in on that one thing and can be seen as being much more successful. I don’t think of it that way but I see from the outside that I can be seen as indecisive. Along those lines, anytime I am home in Indiana I have a love affair with wishing that I wanted to be a grade school teacher, or a lawyer, or own a restaurant, just something that has a clear end goal and sits still. Being able to go to work, then go home and work be over and have “Weekends off” I think is what they call it? I’ve never known that life and I WISH sometimes I wanted that. But alas…I can do NOTHING else and be happy.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those that don’t know me, I started out as an actress moving to LA to make it big at the next Christina Applegate. Tv to Broadway to comedies to tv again. That was the plan. But I am a theatre lover in my soul and in 2012 when I randomly won a singing contest, the award was a produced one person show, which I was NOT ready for. HOWEVER my partner Sarah Hodges and I had wanted to start a cabaret/burlesque troupe with a musical theatre/parody focus and that seemed liek the time to break out and use that show time for what we now know as CHERRY POPPINS! Since then I have been working in all aspects of theatre all over LA, sometimes Houston, New York and even San Fran. I won the NAACP award for Chorepgraphy in LA musicals for RENT at the Hudson, was nominated for an Ovation Award for Best Book of a new musical for “Shakeslesque” and won many Hollywood Fringe Awards with Cherry Poppins. And in the last two years Produced and was a Director for Exorcistic the Rock Musical which performed to sold out houses for months in LA, went to Midsummer scream, was invited to Sketch Fest in San Fransisco and played to an amazing house, and had a very successful off off broadway run at The Box in NYC where is won “Best New Musical” Broadway World NY Awards. None of this to brag but simply state I been hustlin lol. We never stop moving us Hat Racks! Producing and Directing became a truer love of mine over these past several years and while I will ALWAYS love to make a room laugh I am also shifting gears a bit into the “making shit happen” side of the entertainment tracks and actually JUST joined Emery Entertainment as their new Associate!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I don’t really know about resources per say but I do wish I would’ve talked to more people ahead of me in my path and listened more. Not to say that anyone would’ve told me what to do but nothing is better than experience and listening to experiences. May not have changed a damn thing but it’s definitely ALWAYS helpful.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Well this one is hilarious because really it was my time in Houston as a burlesque host/performer and working as a performer at the Texas Rennaissance Festival. Everything is bigger in texas, including your instagram following
