We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alli Mays a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alli, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?

The name of my brand is actually My First Initial, “A” my last name “Mays” and my middle Initial “N”
AMaysNEats ( eats) of course to show case that’s it’s food

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Alli Mays , I grew up in church singing as I discovered at just 8 years old the talent God had given me which fueled my love for singing . As I got older I decided to follow my dreams and pursue music . I’ve been in girl groups and but I landed as a solo artist .. winning a trip to Vegas through the Steve Harvey neighborhood awards . I sang / perform and travel . I never stopped as music is a passion of mines .
About 5 years ago , I worked at truck stop ( pregnant) and brought lunch in ALOT , the truckers would offer up pay me for my food ( smoked turkey legs , seafood boils , SOULFOOD ) after a mint or so of selling my lunches to truckers , I jumped off the porch’s and started my own company “AMaysNEats “ while still singing and performing. I now do both

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

While staring a catering company, singing and performing, plus a single mom .. I began to Facebook challenges . One of the challenges were I needed to go back to school and graduate (I am a single mother , 8 children I didn’t finish high school ) so I went back to get me diploma . In doing so my village and began to face many obstacles . Financial hardship( as I didn’t stop running AMaysNEats, with school and the babies there was no time for a part time job) but I was so determined to finish school and graduate . No matter how tough it got , rent late , no food , very low on finances .. I kept the faith , came to know the God inside of me … and I kept going . During this time we lost our home …. But I still didn’t give up .

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?

There are two books that helped mold and change my mindset during this journey.
“Rich dad /Poor dad”. And”I believe in me”
