We were lucky to catch up with Alli B recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alli, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Finding those key vendors can often be make or break for a brand. Can you talk to us about how you found your key vendors?
We were looking for a hair extension manufacturer, and Beauvoir found us through Instagram. What’s so great about 2023 is how social media can open so many doors for small business owners. We were looking for hair that has great quality and is responsibly sourced, and Beauvoir checked all our boxes. If i were to do anything differently, it would have been to prioritize our social media page way sooner, as it has opened many doors for us!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
At Blue Door Salon we have cultivated a loving and supportive community. I have been doing hair professionally for 22 years, and decided to open up my own salon in 2019. I couldn’t find the right environment and community to work in, so I created one of my own. We provide exceptional hair color, extensions, styling, along with our Seven hair care products and Beauvoir hair extensions. What sets us apart from others is our teamwork and continuing education. We have cultivated a space of creation not competition. I am most proud of the team I have created, the personal relationships I have made with my clients, and the opportunities I have created for other stylist.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I gained my resilience from an experience from working at a past hair studio. I unfortunately experienced an eviction from my former landlord embezzling myself and thirty two other stylist’s rental money. i was forced to work in a salon for two months with no air conditioning due to the circumstances with the property management. Those two months taught me patience, resilience, and strength.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
A few things that has drastically grown our clientele is our referral program. We offer a $20 gift card to our regular guests to give to a new client. Once that guest comes in and uses the gift card, the regular guest gets a $20 gift card emailed to them. We call it 20 for 20. Word of mouth is so important in our community. Always being a part of Ladies Nights and networking with other small businesses in the area is key. We also book our own appointments and check out our own clients. Which allows us to have personal contact with each step of the experience. This being said, I don’t know how many times a client has left the salon because they didn’t like the front desk experience.
