We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alley Scurlark. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alley below.
Hi Alley, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Before deciding to go all the way with my business, I would find myself taking over any task that required me to be creative and find different ways to do things. My grandma was an event decorator as well, so I would help her create draping designs, do nice centerpieces for weddings, and also create something out of nothing. We also did a lot of diys out of material and items we had laying around. I found joy in having an eye for making a space look great and seeing the smile it would put on any client’s face. I knew then that this is something that I would want to do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
With just starting up, I had to invest in myself and believe that everything will work out and pay off. At first, I was not profiting off any of the services that I was doing. I had to really dig deep and consider all expenses. I researched and traveled to different wholesale vendors for my supplies, created a plan that would factor in my time, the quality and durability of the products. This experience was the biggest learning experience for my business and deciding to continue to go forward with it. Anytime I have an inquiry for project, I make sure I factor in all of the details so it can be beneficial for me.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The biggest lesson in starting up a business is using the resources and knowledge around you. I have learned so much with the experienced businesses in the same industry of event planning and decorating. Taking classes for the experience and financial management specifically about what you specialize in, watching tutorial videos and switching it to a technique or design that best suited you helps significantly. It definitely impacted my management and entrepreneurial thinking because I am more educated in the industry and have more awareness about what I’m doing.
