Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allan Koikoi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Allan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Since November 2021, I’ve been fully self-employed, relying solely on my own business ventures for income. Under the mentorship of Derrick Faulcon, owner of Homemaid, I learned how to scale and manage a business effectively. After my time at Homemaid, I went full-time with my brand A Koi Story, which has since grown into an umbrella company spanning social work, food service, clothing, and visual/audio arts. Our mission Statement – I’M GOOD, has grown into a cultural movement across Baltimore city.
From the start, I understood the importance of both social media presence and in-person, hand-to-hand engagement. I began selling outside Security Square Mall before relocating to Rash Field Park, which became the main hub for I’M GOOD from February 2022 to May 2023. During that time, I built a strong social media following and connected deeply with the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill communities. I also launched the “Boards & Breakfast” brunch event at Jake’s Skatepark, which helped expand my reach and led to an opportunity from MCB Baltimore to lease space in Harborplace—where I continue to operate today.

Allan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been a self-taught musician, composer, producer, and videographer since a young age, later receiving some formal training. My most successful SoundCloud project, A Koi Story, gave me the confidence to launch my brand and expand the community and artist work I was already doing. Visuals, clothing, and merchandising became tools to share a positive message (I’M GOOD) while building the brand.
Food became another way to tell my story and bring people together—deeply inspired by my West African roots, where gatherings and shared meals are central to culture. My first business venture was in social work, where I developed a curriculum focused on STEM, financial literacy, and health & wellness. I’ve worked in several Baltimore City schools as both a contracted worker and volunteer, using these programs to engage and uplift students.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle came to me during a period of frustration and anger about my life circumstances. The book taught me the importance of staying balanced and grounded in the present moment. Its lessons continue to guide me in business, reminding me not to get too caught up in future goals or past mistakes, but to stay focused on the opportunities and clarity that exist right now.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Since the beginning, my business has been ran outdoors, facing all kinds of weather and challenges. Every setup and breakdown has tested my dedication but also strengthened my resilience. These experiences remind me that growth often starts in uncomfortable places. The vision of having a permanent space—a roof over our heads where creativity and community can thrive year-round—fuels my drive and gives me hope for what’s ahead.
