We were lucky to catch up with Alizarin Zroob recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alizarin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In 2011, I was traveling the world, digital nomading and adventuring in the Far East. One day, I received an acceptance message from NYU and decided to try my luck moving to NYC.
I arrived with almost nothing—just my ambitious, talented, and wild-card reputation. It was a huge risk, and even to this day, I wonder where I found the guts to make that impulsive move with so few resources. But it was all worth it! It took motivation, community, and a spark of reckless creativity.
I launched a bold, gutsy campaign to promote myself as a creative, targeting the head of NYC’s most prominent creative agency at the time. Fortunately, it went viral enough to gain international publicity and landed exactly where I had hoped. Fresh off the boat, I was already scheduled for interviews for a series of prestigious roles.
Did it all go smoothly with immediate success? Not exactly! The road was turbulent, and I had to hit several milestones first. Nonetheless, making that risky move with confidence and resonance has proven to be beneficial in countless ways—not only for me but also for the community of dreamers and creatives who were inspired to turn their own dreams into reality.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My brand is, first and foremost, a bright pink LED light glistening through the night. That’s me—Alizarin, also known as Zroob—the nerdy pink punk babe joyfully skating through your neighborhood.
I’m fascinated by science, biology, computing, art, spirituality, and ceremony, and how all of these can enhance our health and wellbeing as a society. I strive to stay optimistic, even when it seems impossible. Practicing radical kindness and positivity is incredibly important to me. My brand feels very authentic—it truly represents who I am and my personality. It allows me to express myself and share the messages I care about.
I’m not entirely sure how I knew this was my brand, but its essence is clear and intuitive. While its nuances evolve over time, the core remains consistent and cohesive. I often get complimented on how true I am to myself, and that’s one of the greatest compliments I can receive.
A lot of the work I do is to help you find your brand—how to represent it to the public, how to channel it into symbols, colors, and visual language. The truth is, not everyone needs a brand, but many people do—whether for professional or personal reasons. I truly enjoy helping people and teams discover their brand. There are so many impactful, creative, and artful ways to form a brand and craft the message and offerings it may bring. So don’t hesitate to reach out through my website, Alizarinz.com, for a 15-minute consultation chat. I’d be happy to review whatever you have, offer quick advice, and explore ways we can work together to develop your brand further—possibly designing gorgeous experiences, websites, or campaigns to present it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goals and forces driving me are far from conventional. I stopped caring about fame and fortune early on in the race. I’m not looking for an exit or a retirement plan—I’m focused on a lifestyle that’s sustainable and fulfilling for life. I care about working in a pleasant environment, and I gravitate toward projects that benefit ecology and society. I’m drawn to endeavors that require creativity, optimism, and humor.
I am not impressed by reckless pursuit of wealth. The abundance I’m passionate about is not the kind of fast-burning growth that exhausts itself, but rather a steady, sustainable success. On both the macro and micro resolutions, I always seek the best long-term solution—one that’s sustainable over time.
Yes, I’ve contributed as a designer to successful acquisitions in the billions. But the projects I’m most known for are those that have a lasting societal impact—such as the long-running I Feel and Kustume Kult productions, which foster a whimsical and artistically expressive community.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Early in my career, I became comfortable in the role I held. It was a fun, creative position with a great team. One day, I suddenly lost that job. It was devastating—I didn’t see it coming—but, of course, these things happen. It was a tough time, but once one door closed, a window opened. In this case, I had the opportunity to establish myself as a successful design studio owner. I pivoted into running my own business, which opened up incredible opportunities. I worked with leaders in data, cybersecurity, and crypto, alongside inventors and scientists—people and companies making a tangible impact on society, economy, and ecology.
I can’t deny that losing a steady job was mentally demoralizing. I felt really down at the time, but what helped me bounce back was discovering flow art and poi dance, which allowed me to reconnect with my body. I invested in my wellbeing through personally tailored fitness training, and over time, I became more confident, more eloquent in local conversations, and approached business with a newfound sense of flow.
