We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aliyah Houston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aliyah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Dunia Organix was founded & funded by myself a grad student with shallow pockets who just wanted simple & effective skincare. Skincare that was made using what mother nature had already gifted us. I wanted to move away from what had become an industry norm; ingredients hard to pronounce, un natural preservatives, silicon and other harmful additives. We should be able to trust the things we put in and on our bodies. Derived from plant based and organic ingredients, my products help treat & heal skin ailments while giving you a natural glow!
Aliyah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey I’m Aliyah Houston the founder of Dunia Organix. I have a background and education in biology & business. In my 9-5 I work for an amazing Tech company where I strategize for our recruiting & hiring in Sales. The remainder of my time is spent growing Dunia Organix reach, being a dog mom, traveling and keeping active indoor cycling, hiking, etc.
My passions for skincare and using nature for medicine have been around since I was a kid. I grew up in the country surrounded by trees, animals and tons of time to spend exploring it all. When I began to experience acne I naturally turned to home remedies to treat it. I remember making my first mask from rolled oats, my moms coffee grounds & oat milk. As I grew older I would turn to natural oils, super foods, fruit & plant extracts to make these homemade concoctions for myself and others to try.
Since establishing Dunia Organix in 2020 I strive to always evolve our formulas but keeping true to our roots & utilizing what nature gives us to heal the skin.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
When I figured out I wanted to turn a passion into a business I started making products in my college apartment. It was very messy, little accuracy with measurements and a lot of just “trying to figure it out”. Once I had a good base formulation for a couple of products I began looking for manufactures to produce a consumer safe product.
One of the most important things in finding the “right one” was finding one who aligned with my company’s’ values. It was important to see that they had produced natural and organic products, with an emphasis on ethical sourcing of their ingredients, cruelty free, as well as a history of producing quality and effective products.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In person events, markets, showcases, etc. have brought in the most customers outside of ads, and social media. Connecting with people in my community face to face, letting them meet me hear me explain the benefits, and see the results of the products first hands helps build trust. Focusing on customer experience, the details, quality products, and education so that one time customers become repeats.
