We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alix Barth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alix, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I definitely got the “entrepreneurial gene” as both of my parents are entrepreneurs. My mom is a successful Landscape Architect – she got started by mowing lawns. I remember going to work with her when I was little and dancing in people’s driveways while she maintained their yard. She grew her business from there into the success it is today. I believe it was good for me to witness her working her way up… Starting where she could and building to what she actually WANTED. Most success, I’m learning, isn’t handed to us. We rarely know the stories behind what got someone to the success they are today.
And my father – well, he wears many hats. He has taught me more than this article has space for. But, two things that stand out the most – multiple streams of revenue is key and if you do what you love, the money will come. He hasn’t been wrong yet.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started in the industry as a personal trainer. Grew my clientele – some have been with me for almost 15 years! And while I would offer nutritional advice to my PT clients – I knew I wanted to make a bigger impact on people’s health – strength training is SO important, but it’s a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to our holistic health. So, in 2018 I decided to take my Nutrition business full time.
Backing up a bit – I battled with anorexia starting at the age of 14. The healing I had to go through to overcome this is a large part of what spawned my passion for helping others.
I help adults and teens make peace with food and their body and teach them how to eat for the rest of their lives.
I believe nutrition is multi-faceted. It is food – of course – and that I coach from an anti-inflammatory perspective. But it is also how we take care of our nervous system, manage stress, our digestive habits (gut health), sleep hygiene, self-talk, movement and hydration habits… Nutrition is how we NOURISH ourselves – it is anything we put IN our bodies so that what comes OUT is energy, balanced hormones, radiant skin, vitality, balanced blood sugar – the list goes on.
With my clients – we work on all of these areas: food (meal plans), blood sugar stabilization, gut health, self-talk, mindfulness, nervous system regulation (stress management), sleep and movement…
I spend a lot of time educating clients and helping clients observe their own body – how do they feel when they eat certain things… I’ve found THIS to be the greatest educator of all – most people just don’t take the time to do it. Accountability from me is helpful here.
I help clients move from a space of judgement and punishment toward themselves to compassion and kindness… Overcoming limiting beliefs around food, food choices and their body. Doing this from a place of compassion vs judgement actually gets people moving forward vs stuck like most are when they come to me.
It is a beautiful transformation to watch someone start making progress just by shifting their own attitude toward themselves.
And THIS is how I help people make peace with food and their body. Does weight loss happen? Yes. Do hormones get balanced? Yes. Do sleep and movement become priorities? Yes. Does blood sugar get stabilized? Yes. …but we accomplish all of these not by focusing on each one (that would be overwhelming) but by approaching the body holistically and recognizing that each thing impacts the other…
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One word – consistency. I do what I say I am going to do. Anyone who has worked with me will testify to this.
I believe this is one of the most important values we can have as a human, but also as a business owner.
People want consistency. They want to know they can count on you – in the small things (like billing and showing up to appointments on time) to the big things (like following through with the deliverables you said you would).
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely. If I were to change anything – I would go back to school and grab another major in Psychology. I do have a minor in it – and that has been helpful. But, if you work with people – especially 1on1, like I do… And if you’re helping people change habits and beliefs, set goals, etc. – having a greater understanding of how a person ticks can be tremendously helpful.
I’m grateful that I have had the opportunity to study the field of Psychology and human behavior on my own. In part due to what I went through in my own battle with anorexia. And this has helped in my work with clients in a huge way.
