We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alister Kruizenga. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alister below.
Alister, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Believe it or not as I’m writing this I’m only 23. I quit my job at a place called tech defenders when I wanted to try to risk being a photographer full time by myself. It was definitely scary. Being so young and trying to figure out taxes (or just the general sense of financial literacy) is terrifying for someone so young. But I’m also the happiest I’ve ever been. I guess I wanted to introduce a little chaos into my life. But I think you should only do those risks when you know you’ll be alright financially. Never go without a plan
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started photography in high school, I wasn’t really good at anything. I wasn’t good at painting or drawing but I loved tech. So when I picked up a camera that kind of just blew up from there. I was just known as “that” photographer who took senior pictures. I then graduated Into doing more video work and weddings. I’m just happy to be doing some thing that I love from the very beginning. I now work with an agency called carbon stories and they provide lots of love and support
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would say try to learn everything about what editing software you use. Whether it’s premiere pro, Final cut, Davinci resolve, Photoshop or after effects. Try to watch every YouTube video that exists on YouTube. There is so much free knowledge
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I used to copy peoples photos to try to learn how they took it. And I think that’s the best way of learning of how something is achieved. If you don’t understand something why not try to learn it. I like learning how things work specially if I don’t understand it. After that I made my own style into it and declared it my own
