Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alissa Cordoba. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being successful in the photography industry has to be a combination of both talent and business sense. You can be an incredibly talented photographer/artist, but if you lack the ability to run an actual business you will either quickly get burnt out, or fail to make it profitable. There is no industry standard of pricing for photography, and it has a relatively low barrier to entry other than the upfront equipment costs, so getting into it is easy! However, maintaining it long term requires pricing for an actual profit (which is much higher than most start out at), time management, and realizing that 70% of it is all of the backend stuff and only 30% is actually taking photos. It’s a huge time commitment to run this business and most don’t understand that getting into it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Brand Photographer in the Austin, TX area that helps brands tell their story in a visually compelling way, in order to connect with their ideal clients and boost their sales through imagery. Potential customers have so many choices to choose from, and are searching for a way to connect with the brand they are going to purchase from. Having professional photography that connects and resonates with ideal clients is an important factor in getting them to purchase!
My work focuses on lifestyle photos and videos that share a story, and incorporates client interactions and the people behind the brand. This type of photography is different than traditional headshots, as is it unique to each brand being photographed. Each project is custom quoted to suit individual brand needs, no one size fits all approach with me!
My clients choose me for my use of light, true to life color tones in editing and the emotion and personality I am able to convey and document for Brands.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the feedback of how my Brand photography has helped successfully launch business or hearing about the immense ROI clients saw after investing in my services. Growing a business is hard work, and being able to be a part of that for clients during a launch, or a huge rebrand and seeing their success has been amazing!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy has been making connections with people I already know, and word of mouth referrals. When you provide a positive experience for your clients, those referrals come easily! Getting clients to write reviews, tag on social media and also become repeat clients has been both effective and rewarding.
