We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alissa Chapin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alissa below.
Alissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My career started as a Registered Nurse in 2014 as a medical-surgical nurse on a cardiac/telemetry floor. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2013 and had my first child 2 months later (February 2014). Fun fact: I sat for my NCLEX 2 days before I gave birth! I decided to stay home with my daughter for the first few months of her life, then landed my first job later in the year. I was working 3 12-hour night shifts per week at the time, which had its perks, but between night shift and having an infant at home, sleep was not a thing that year. The job in itself was very challenging and rewarding simultaneously. I felt like a sponge during my time there – soaking in as many learning moments as I could. I eventually became a charge nurse, which brought on a new set of responsibilities and challenges. Overall, I am incredibly thankful for that first nursing job. It laid the foundation for my future, humbled me, taught me how precious life is, and gave me a sense of purpose. No two shifts were alike and I experienced things within the walls of that little hospital that I will never forget!
Alissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Alissa Chapin, NP-C and I am the Founder of Rise Wellness. I opened my practice in 2022, initially offering IV hydration and wellness injections, before switching gears to medical weight management. Currently, I own a successful telehealth weight loss clinic servicing all of Ohio (Go Bucks)! Most of my patients come to me for help after several failed weight loss attempts. At Rise Wellness, we do a “deep dive” on labs to see what we can optimize for the best success. Many times, insulin resistance and low functioning thyroid can hinder the ability to lose weight. We offer nutrition counseling and compounded GLP-1 medications to help facilitate weight loss and improve overall health.
I have personally struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember, and I am proud to say that with the help of semaglutide, I have lost 100 pounds while helping others on their way to better health and longevity. It has been incredibly fulfilling to be on the same journey as my patients. I am able to form deeper connections with my patients and be a safe space for those that have lost all confidence in themselves. It is important to me that people come to a non-judgmental clinic where they can celebrate their victories with someone who is in the same boat as them – not only as a provider, but as a human being!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Along with many other working Americans, the year 2020 forced me to pivot in my career. I had been working as a Telephonic Nurse Case Manager handling Worker’s Compensation claims for several years. Unfortunately, the company I was working for did a major layoff due to the new dynamics the company was faced with. Initially, the shock of being laid off was devastating and made me question who I was as a nurse. Over time I realized it wasn’t personal. Pivoting was the only choice I had – so back to school I went! I later became a Family Nurse Practitioner and sat for my boards while pregnant with my 3rd baby (I guess that’s just “my thing”). I knew before I even graduated that I wanted to become a business owner in some capacity. After some serious contemplation and persuasion from colleagues, Rise Wellness was created – and it’s been the biggest blessing to my family. Every day I grow more passionate about bettering my business and surrounding myself with people where I can make this possible.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
From an entrepreneur perspective, the short answer is: stay humble, always be transparent with your clients, and stay true to who you are. My clinic thrives on word-of-mouth referrals and that speaks volumes to me. Knowing that a patient was so happy with their results that they recommended my services to a family member or friend is the best compliment! I will always stand behind the mission at Rise Wellness which reads: “our goal is to promote healing from the inside out while maintaining a safe & relaxed atmosphere. We value accuracy, safety, and comfort. We strive to provide you with the BEST service.”
