We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meuffy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meuffy below.
Meuffy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Painting has been a journey of constant self-discovery. It sometimes feels like I am going in circles, asking myself the same questions and rediscovering the same answers. However, I think that the repetition allows me to spiral higher, dig deeper, and understand my art on a new plane. It’s also helpful to go back to the basics, to strengthen my foundation, and to reconnect with my vision.
I recently experienced this repetition. I have been on a journey of intentional developing my art, and I feel like I’ve made a real leap in realizing my desire to focus on building a world for my figure paintings. Well, I just so happened to stumble across some sketches from about 6 months ago, when I once again had this type of realization. At the time, I was exploring new ways to incorporate landscapes and other elements into my paintings, but I struggled to find a way to do so that felt inspired and in flow. But now, six months later, I’ve had more time to marinate on this idea, and I’m only now feeling ready to build a world that is meaningful, authentic, and abstracted in the same way that I paint my figures.
This repetition is not only a chance to learn from my past experiences, but also a lesson in trusting that my instincts are leading me in the right direction.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist, writer, and lawyer, based in Seattle. I’ve always been a creative, growing up in the arts and studying dance in college. I ended up straying from my creative roots and pursuing a career in law, but once I became a lawyer, I had a strong yearning to return to the arts. I began oil painting and have found inspiration and fulfillment in the creative process once again. It’s allowed me a safe space to follow the threads that had been showing my whole life, acting as a means of understanding my most authentic curiosities and desires.
My work is characterized by vibrant colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and soft textures that create a sense of otherworldly beauty and mystery. I predominantly feature the feminine figure, rendering my paintings with movement, emotion, and empowering compositions.
My recent work leans into raw, nonconformist femininity and sensuality. In rebellion against performative and aspirational femininity often imposed by the male gaze, I focus on themes of connection to the inner child, intimacy and vulnerability, and surrender to Self.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I absolutely love art-related podcasts. They are a primary source of inspiration for me, when it comes to creativity, art business, and self-discovery. Some of my favorites include Creative Pep Talk Podcast, Art Juice, Savvy Painter Podcast, Art + Magic, Flow into Authenticity, and Do It For the Process. Whenever I’m in the car or shower, I love listening to the newest episode from any of these podcasts.
Probably the biggest lesson that I’ve learned from all of these podcasts is focusing on the process, rather than rushing toward a result. It can be easy to fall into the trap of creating for the sake of selling, which tends to result in less authentic, fulfilling work.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission, at least for this chapter of my creative journey, is to listen to my intuition and follow the pulls and inspiration I feel, ultimately leading me to my most authentic work. I believe that by creating art, I’m able to connect with my inner self and express my emotions in a way that feels fulfilling. I’m on a journey to find greater meaning and purpose in my life, and creating art has provided a path toward that fulfillment. Throughout my journey, I’ve been pulled by a variety of themes and ideas, including feminism, empowerment, reflection, spirituality, and authenticity. I’m currently working toward exploring and expressing these themes in my artwork, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
