We recently connected with Alison Nissen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
I was an English major with a secret. I struggled to read. As an undiagnosed dyslexic, I read slowly, had difficulty spelling, and understood grammar through osmosis. I convinced myself that I could never be a writer. During my final semester in college, I received a less-than-stellar grade on an essay due to mechanical errors. Noticing my smile fade, my professor stopped me before I left the classroom. “Alison,” he said. “If you want to be a writer, you’d have an editor.”
His words, “If you want to be, you would,” changed my perception of my future. He opened a door that I assumed was not possible to unlock. While I did not become a writer immediately, that seed began to grow. I eventually became a composition professor–but I still didn’t think I could write. Deep down, I believed “those who can’t teach.”
When I was passed over for a promotion because my competition had written a book, I dusted off my former professor’s words and started to write. I joined writers’ groups, took classes, and began submitting my work to writing contests.
His statement all those years earlier was simple, but I learned perfection is overrated. Knowing where and how to find the help we need to succeed is much more important than holding onto our own self-doubt.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
During my writing renaissance, I discovered the world of ghostwriting. Eventually, I connected with the victim of a true crime case to write his book. During that experience, I learned that while everyone has a story to share, not everyone knows how.
Revel Coach, the platform my sister and I created, grew from the idea that executives often need solutions at their fingertips. Successful leaders use key storytelling points to engage their audience and gain market share because they know good storytelling is the best form of marketing, recruiting, and fundraising.
While I still offer ghostwriting services, much of my work is focused on helping leaders build team identity by creating a unified story through masterminds, workshops, and keynotes. When leaders find and tell their stories, they can change the world.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I started to take my writing seriously, I joined a few writers’ groups in the area. Eventually, I volunteered to join the board of directors of the Florida Writers Association. I met thousands of other writers from all over the US and started the Florida Writer Podcast, a discussion about writing and other things.
These two platforms offered me the ability to ask questions of other writers–about their journies, their successes and setbacks, and their paths to publication, while building my own brand.
Writing has taught me the three rules to success: Show Up, Do the Work, & Ask Questions.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My co-founder is my sister, Marcy Stoudt. Five years apart, we took different paths after college. My sister sped her way to the top of the corporate food chain while I meandered through manufacturing, human resources, and retail.
When our mother entered mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease, we began to chat daily about their dream of launching our own business. We signed off each call with the chant: “It’s better together!” The more we talked, the more excited we became about the future.
We designed Revel Coach as an inspirational platform that mentors executives and entrepreneurs who wish to find career and family success. When you have a vivid vision, aligned action, and a growth mindset, it is possible to find harmony by celebrating every small and large success.
