We recently connected with Alison Moulder and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Since I began working in home organizing 3 years ago, I have observed several trends emerging in this industry. First, is that hiring professional home organizers is now something that more and more people are embracing, and not just a celebrity trend that is only for the rich and famous so to speak. Thanks to shows like “The Home Edit” on Netflix, the world was introduced to the concept of home organization several years ago, but this service has now emerged as something practical and helpful for families and busy professionals anywhere. If you think about it, most people hire others to do many tasks in their home that they either can’t do themselves or simply don’t have the time to complete. From cleaning and lawn care to remodeling and carpentry services to plumbers and electricians, almost all of us have hired someone who specializes in a field that we don’t have in-depth knowledge about. When it comes to our homes if there is a problem, we want an expert in that area to implement a solution.
Home organization is the same thing in many ways. We have had countless clients tell us that they started to feel overwhelmed with their things so began attempting to get a particular space organized only to become overwhelmed, tired or interrupted by one of the many pressing tasks of the day. However, once our team comes in, what might have taken that client days or even weeks takes us just hours. This is the beauty of hiring a home organizer and one of the main reasons we see this service becoming more frequently utilized and accessible by families everywhere. We offer sustainable solutions to common organizational issues.
I think one of other biggest trends in the home organizing industry is that people are embracing minimalism and simplicity more and more these days. Simply put, consumerism and owning “stuff” doesn’t equate to happiness. Many of our clients felt like they were drowning in their things and most certainly did not have a sense of peace and calm upon entering their home at the end of the day. We believe that simplicity elevates any room and that the less you own, the less you have to maintain or keep track of. By helping our clients organize a space, we are able to show them what they currently own (we pull everything out and sort it into categories) and then let them keep only those things that they need or want. The result is a simplified and minimal space, and a sense of peace for our clients.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always loved all things “home” (I was the kid who thought it was fun to rearrange my bedroom and organize the pantry!) I then worked in education for years prior to organizing. When I first became a teacher, I found that transforming my classroom into a simplified and organized space helped create a healthy learning environment for my students. Later, when I became a mom and transitioned into staying at home to raise my kids, I realized that an organized home was essential as our lives got busier. This is what inspired me to start a home organizing business!
While organization has always been a natural talent of mine, it’s my passion for working with people to help them achieve a sense of peace and simplicity in their home that I love most about my job. Over the past few years, I have seen firsthand the effects that simplifying and organizing spaces has on individuals and families and it is truly life changing!
The wonderful thing about our business is that we have a team of like-minded women who work together to simplify and organize our clients’ homes. Our team takes care of the entire process from planning and product sourcing, to organizing, labeling and even taking away the donations. We can accomplish so much in a short time and leave our clients with a newly organized space that helps take the weight off their shoulders so they can focus on other things. We love what we do but we love helping our clients most of all!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for us is a referral. Louisville (where we work) has often been described as a big city with a small town feel and we absolutely sense this in our line of work. Almost 75 percent of our clients are referred to us from a family member, friend or neighbor. One of our most recent clients called us after stopping by her neighbor’s house (we had just organized her office the previous week) and she was so blown away by the transformation that she scheduled us to come right away! This is the highest form of a compliment we can receive!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
While home organizing may have started out as a side-hustle at first, it has quickly grown into a nearly full time business! After several months of organizing homes and spaces, running the behind-the-scenes aspects of the business, and trying to do it all basically, I decided that hiring other team members was essential if we were going to make it. This was hands-down the best decision I ever made! Having a team allows us to work in multiple homes each week (I no longer have to tell clients that we are booked out for 6 weeks when they really need a project done soon!) and allows us to accomplish so much more than I previously could alone.
