We were lucky to catch up with Alisha Watkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
People may or may not know that I am/was a teen mom. I got pregnant at 15 and had my first child, Alyssa, at 16. As difficult as it was, I was fortunate enough to remain in the household with both of my parents. I still faced so many challenges that I promised myself then that I would do everything I could later on to make a difference. That’s why the “Bringing Us Together” non-profit organization is truly my biggest accomplishment career wise.
Alisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I go by Alisha Kenshe’, I am an A&R and podcast host but my proudest career path is founding my own non-profit organization “Bringing Us Together” which caters towards young minority parents. We have recently started an initiative called “Protect Our Crowns” which is a month’s mental health check-in for minorities. We have brunch and a fun group discussion led by licensed therapists. I’ve truly realized that this initiative has made more impact on the community than anything I’ve ever done is music. The next event is December 11th, we predict it to be the biggest one yet!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being an entrepreneur and juggling so many different hats can be hard as a mom. I’ve had to juggle so many different hats while making sure I’m the best mom that I can be. I still have to work a 9-5 job. I have been a pharmacy technician for on/off about ten years. It can be hard balancing so many hats but I believe I was built for this!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the most important thing in the industry is to keep your face card clean! I can not emphasize that enough. If people know you for good business, they will always pick up the phone. I feel like I’ve done a good job of that. And also, do things out of love especially for those who look out for you. These things seem simple but they will get you a long way!
