Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alisha Fluker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alisha , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
The decision to start Well Dawn Integrative Health, PLLC (formerly Peace of Mind Psychiatric Services, PLLC) came at a pivotal moment in my life. I had just been laid off unexpectedly, and to be honest, it was quite unsettling. After some reflection and prayer, I realized I had two choices: go back to working for someone else or take a leap of faith and create something of my own. I chose to leap.
The initial steps were practical—registering the business, securing office space, and tackling all the licensing and legal paperwork. I took a course to make sure I wasn’t overlooking anything. After that, came the business side—learning about billing, insurance, and maintaining compliance. It felt a bit overwhelming at times. After my first year, I found a mentorship program that helped me navigate unforeseen challenges and learn from other practice owners, which turned out to be invaluable.
Looking back, if I could do it over, I’d definitely start networking and seeking mentorship earlier. Learning from those who have already walked this path could have saved me some headaches and a few thousand dollars along the way.
For young professionals thinking about starting their own practice, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, but be prepared. Surround yourself with supportive people, seek advice from experienced mentors, and don’t rush the process. Building a practice takes time, but if you stay focused on serving your clients and maintaining a patient-centered approach, you’ll create something that truly reflects your values and vision.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m originally from Mississippi but have called Texas home for quite a while now. My journey into healthcare began when I became a licensed practical nurse (or vocational nurse, depending on where you’re from). I decided to further my education and become a nurse practitioner, which allowed me to expand my role in providing care. Over the years, I’ve worked in various healthcare settings; nursing homes, community health, private practices, jail health, and inpatient behavioral health. Each experience has given me a unique perspective on patient care and mental health.
My practice, Well Dawn Integrative Health, PLLC, focuses on helping women facing mental health challenges like anxiety, depression and perinatal mood disorders. I also provide specialized support for African American women dealing with hair loss, especially alopecia, which can significantly impact emotional well-being.
One of the benefits of operating a virtual practice is the ability to reach women across multiple states, including Alaska, Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington.
So, what sets us apart? I don’t just prescribe medications. As an integrative practitioner, I combine medication management with lifestyle changes—things like nutrition, medical grade supplements, and stress management. I take the time to really listen to my clients, working together to develop a treatment plan that feels right for them. It’s about more than just fixing symptoms, it’s about empowering women to take control of their mental health and overall well-being.
I’m especially proud of the space we’ve created where women feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. For anyone considering reaching out, know that we are here to offer compassionate, collaborative support tailored to your unique journey.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation has really come down to staying true to my core values, listening to my patients, treating them with genuine care, being respectful, and maintaining transparency. Word-of-mouth has been a powerful tool for us. When people feel truly supported, they naturally want to share that experience with others. That’s been the foundation of our growth.
Another key factor is providing services that are not widely accessible. By specializing in perinatal mood disorders and emphasizing women’s mental health, I’ve been able to connect with individuals who often feel underserved in traditional healthcare settings.
Networking has also played a big role. If people aren’t aware of your business, they can’t refer to you. This really pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and grow in ways I never expected. Additionally, incorporating technology has made care much more accessible for women who might struggle to come into an office—especially postpartum mothers who may feel anxious about taking their newborn out in public. It’s all about finding that balance between innovation and compassion, and that’s how we’ve built trust within the community.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The biggest pivot in my career came when I chose to go back to school for an additional certification after a decade in my field. I found myself feeling unfulfilled, sensing that something was missing. While it didn’t seem like the most practical decision financially, I knew it was a leap of faith I had to take. Thankfully, the right people entered my life at just the right time, making the transition smoother than I had anticipated. I’m truly grateful for that choice, as it has been life-changing.
As a business owner, I’ve had to pivot several times. I’ve adapted my services based on my clients’ needs and my evolving skill set. I’m committed to continuous learning, taking additional classes to enhance my ability to serve my clients. Recently, I decided to change my business name to better align with the direction I’m heading. This shift prompted several other necessary changes to help scale my practice effectively. While it was a significant adjustment, I’ve come to embrace change. The most important lesson I’ve learned through this journey is that I’m not alone—God has been with me every step of the way. Regardless of the challenges or changes ahead, I trust that He’s guiding me.
