We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alisa Venglinskaya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
one Saturday morning, I received a call from an unknown number. A man started talking to me nervously. he asked if I work with brides? Am I free to come within a few hours and do makeup for the bride and a few bridesmaids? At first I didn’t understand anything… I calmed him down a little and asked him to calmly tell me what happened. He took a breath and exhaled… and began to talk. It turned out that the makeup artist who was supposed to work at his wedding with his future wife simply did not pick up her phone and did not answer emails for several days. they hoped that she would still arrive on the wedding day. but she never arrived. The bride was in despair… he said that by some miracle he had been given my phone number, and he was begging me to come and save their wedding. Luckily, I was free that day. I warned that I could arrive within 1.5 hours. He happily agreed and began to thank me. That day, I never got ready so quickly lol. On the way to the wedding, I experienced a storm of emotions, misunderstanding how people could simply not come to filming/weddings/events. I just started imagining myself in the bride’s place… a goose shiver ran through me. I arrived earlier than the agreed upon time, since the event was only 35 minutes from my home. The future groom met me, he joyfully shook my hand and thanked me again. The bride and all the bridesmaids were very pleased with my work, and I was happy to be a part of their important event…
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I never thought of becoming a professional makeup artist. My journey began a long time ago, when I was still dancing professionally. And I have always been fascinated by doing makeup for myself and for others. After I graduated from school, my friends asked me to do their makeup for various events and I happily agreed. One day, my friend asked why I don’t work professionally and don’t go get a diploma as a makeup artist? I thought this was a great idea. I found the best school in the city, completed a year’s training and began my journey. The most difficult and scary thing was getting started… I didn’t understand how to find clients, how to advertise myself, I was worried, what if someone doesn’t like my work? I got a job in a beauty studio, began to gain clients, and there were more and more of them. Then I started getting invitations to photo shoots, fashion shows, and weddings. It is very important to me that my client is satisfied with my work. I always tell my clients, we work as a team, if you don’t like something just tell me right away and I’ll fix it. I always follow the rule that if you do a good job, the client will tell at least 5 people about you, and if you do a bad job, that client will tell 100 people. so always try to do your best work. I love what I do and I love seeing the happy smiles of my clients. Now there are a lot of talented makeup artists, but you can’t be afraid of competition, you need to improve and believe in yourself and only move forward.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
You should always be a professional in your field, always learn new things, and not be afraid of challenges. Always find inspiration and new ideas. arrive to clients on time and be friendly to everyone. understand and feel the idea of a shooting project, event, etc. Don’t be afraid to talk about your ideas, advise and offer your vision. Be a great team worker.
