Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alina Zamanova. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alina, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I studied art since I was in school, and my parents gave a full freedom in choosing my future when I was selecting the university, for which I am grateful. I decided to dedicate my studies towards art and fashion , and when I moved to London to study Bachelor degree in Illustration, it opened me as an artist creatively and gave me the opportunity to learn how to think critically and to deepen my art practise. After the university I became a full-time artist, learned through online videos how to paint with oil paint, and rented my own art studio in Kyiv. It all gave me opportunity to become an artist who I am today. I am always open to learning from other people too, or from other artists, I think communication is important and it gives you knowledge that you cannot learn otherwise.

Alina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I mentioned before , I am a full-time artist, living and working in Kyiv Ukraine for the past 7 years. I studied in London before and in Kyiv. My paintings and sculptures reflect the complexities of the human condition, exploring themes such as identity, mortality, search for meaning and purpose in a conflict-thorn world, that is often filled with trauma, suffering and tragedy but also perseverance, dignity and compassion.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I feel that I have this urge inside to express and share about the experience of what we are going through in Ukraine during full-scale war. It’s a different life here now, compared to before the 24th of February 2022 and being an artist living in Ukraine now is a difficult powerful experience.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When people pay attention to stories and broaden their mind and open new conversations about the topic that is portrayed.
