We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alina Thomas . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alina below.
Alright, Alina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
My hope for SunKiss Beauty as a legacy is to be able to build Generational Wealth. I came from poverty and I remember there were times where my mom couldn’t make rent or it wasn’t enough food in the house and we were surviving off of home made sugar cookies. So to be able to began laying down a foundation for SKB legacy is a goal that I am striving for and to build continuously. I am focusing SKB on these factors which are the Core Values of the band; Empowerment, Discover, to Achieve and Evolve.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alina Thomas Founder of SunKiss Beauty LLC but partner with Tyler my best friend, I was born in Cleveland Ohio, a young girl from the projects and the youngest of nine children. I am a mother. I studies at SNHU and graduated in 2015 with my AA in Fashion Merchandising and minor in Business Management; fashion guru. I decided to “tap my toes in the beauty industry hoping to make a ripple effect“. Which is very interesting; yet rewarding, because I have the opportunity to make someone else feel good through the products that are offered from SunKiss Beauty. The type of products that are offered would be place in the category of Bath and Body; items such as Whipped Body Butters, Lotions, Body Sprays, Soaps, Sugar Scrubs, and HairCare. All organic, free from paraben, sulfate and cruelty. The problems I am trying to solve with my skin care brand is hyperpigmentation, dry skin, psoriasis, eczema, blemishes, just to mention a few, while resulting in healthy growing skin. Like every American Beauty I suffer from it which resulted to the development of the brand and its products. Now, what makes my beauty brand different, to be honest the market is over saturated, there are other products out there with a better slogan, packing, marketing team and more funding, followers and clients, but when I created SunKiss Beauty I not only thought of myself but the customer as well. Which is affordable, by the way, but if their having skin issues or problems and how would I be able to help. I’m most proud of the opportunity, I came from a tough life style, a lot of obstacles, tribulations “fourth Small Business” lol, set backs, but for me it was preparation I could not have gotten this far without being put in situations that caused me to re-think, re-approach, and re-build. So that I can build a foundation and pave away with my story to help like minded- individuals that come from where I come from and been through what I been through. And to be able to plant a seed of hope, that anything is possible, why gave up today and tomorrow might be the day you start winning; And trust me this is just the beginning. I would like the customer to know SKB vision is to Empower our customers help improve their appearance, helping them to Discover confidence an self-esteem; Achieve healthy glowing skin and Evolve not only as a brand but as a reliable source for the customer essentials needs.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was stop giving up. The back story is I had four businesses, but only two LLC’s I’ve done Event Planing, Customized Items, Cosmetics, and Currently SKB. Now to be honest I sold from all businesses. And is currently selling products from SunKiss Beauty. Now, I had few set backs that had me depressed, struggling, lost of love ones which resulted in me losing my self. And it’s the worst feeling in the world, to loose yourself and people most dear to you. No amount of money can replace. So I had to re-set and heal from my traumas. So I learn to re-enforce Self Care., Self Love. You have to love what you see in the mirror. Recognize no matter what you go through, there is a brighter day after the storm.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding a business can be tough, but with the right tools and resources it can be done. First set a budget, make sure it includes all the essentials needs for the business. Be mindful to stay within the budgets and use your product/service funding to put back into your business. like most if not all are using personal profits, “ money from a second or third hustle”. Mindful advice have a Mock/ prototype of each product it will help you save money. But the general concept is to make the Business your building you primary source of income.
