We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alima Sanni a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alima, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Music Love Harmony started as a music blog on June 28, 2014. I started by interviewing emerging music artists. The brand expanded to apparel in 2019. The purpose was to create an apparel brand that celebrates the art form of music while also empowering emerging artists. It’s been a long journey filled with ups and downs, but I’m grateful for how far the brand has come. I’m also grateful to receive audience feedback as Music Love Harmony’s apparel line expands. The brand has evolved over the years and it’s a work in progress.
Alima, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My background is in music journalism, music production and entertainment business. I’m passionate about music, fashion and entrepreneurship. In the beginning, Music Love Harmony combined two things that I love, music and writing. Prior to creating Music Love Harmony, I wrote music articles for different publications.
Five years after establishing the brand, I felt called to entrepreneurship and I wanted to create a music-centered apparel brand that resonates with music lovers. Music Love Harmony offers apparel as well as digital and print magazines. I want Music Love Harmony to become a platform where emerging music artists feel seen and heard. The brand’s mission is to empower emerging artists and celebrate three things that are needed in the world: music, love and harmony.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Music Love Harmony also has digital and print magazines. I like that this offer provides the convenience of a digital download and the option of physical magazine copies that featured artists can purchase for their friends and families.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My local Small Business Development Center has been a great resource. With the help of an advisor, we were able to put together a 13-page marketing plan. I also like collaborating with artists, online publications, and other brands.
