We recently connected with Alika McGuire and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alika , thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I started my chiropractic practice in January of 2020. It was already a challenge starting off as I had just gotten out of contracted position that didn’t go well. Regardless, I was excited to take the step and do things on my own. I had found an office with a small space for rent, and I got going. In the first few days, I had mailed out postcards and business cards to just about anyone I could. Over the next few weeks, my schedule began to fill up and I started seeing some quick growth.
However, no one could have predicted how the pandemic would hit them. In a matter of days, my busy schedule turned into just a few people a week. During this time, I did whatever I could to get more business. Offering to see people in their homes, special pricing for new patients, and more.
It was difficult to grow my business, and even more difficult to pay living expenses. So I did what I know best, which is how to connect and care for the person in front of me with my chiropractic care. I asked my patients to refer anyone they knew, and whatever else I could to get new business. Slowly but surely, people started coming back and new patients started coming in. I spent many sleepless nights and many days wondering how will I ever make it, but I managed to make it through the pandemic.
To any young professional wanting to start your own business, my advice is this….
Find a problem in the world that needs solving. Then, find a service you can provide that solves that problem that you’re inspired to do everyday. Find out where those two areas intersect and do that!
Owning and operating your business is filled with challenges. However, when you’re inspired and congruent with your values, these challenges are no longer in the way, they’re on the way! The challenges are no longer obstacles blocking your way, but instead, they are necessary things to overcome on your way to success.
Just remember to have fun along the way!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My first experience in a chiropractic office was in 2014 when I applied to be an intern at the Weld Family Clinic of Chiropractic in Greeley, Colorado. The doctors there, Dr. Ryan, Dr. Erik, and Dr. Patricia taught me the value and impact of chiropractic care and your overall health. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a chiropractor.
I graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic in April of 2019. I opened my first office in January of 2020, and in June of this year (2022), I expanded into a larger space.
Although my office is small, it is a place where I can educate people on the importance of maintaining their health by providing chiropractic care. Along with chiropractic adjustments, I offer intersegmental traction to help people with their spines mobility and range of motion.
While many people come to me for help with their low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. I make it a point to educate everyone that chiropractic adjustments and its relationship to the spinal nerves can have an effect on any aspect of the someone’s health. Because of this, people tell me everyday how their health has changed beyond their aches and pains with my care.
Many of my patients have reported improvements in sleep, mood, focus, and posture, Even things like hearing, or taste, as well as decreased bloating, menstrual pains, and more.
My favorite thing is when I am able to hear stories of how a patients life has changed in ways that are important to them beyond not having any pain. I love hearing how a father is able to play basketball with his son again after experiencing terrible back pain from an injury. Or to see an elderly patient walk into the office without their cane. It’s a beautiful thing to see, and I truly believe you can expect miracles when going to the chiropractor!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Ignorance is bliss, except in the realm of self discovery.
You can never go wrong working on yourself. When you know who you are, what you value, and have a clear vision on what you want; you will automatically take actions to create the circumstances, conditions, and environments to have it. When you find out who you are and what makes you unique, lean into it. And have fun with it!

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely not, I love seeing the sometimes immediate shift in patients mood and physiology after an adjustment. I love hearing their voice sound less congested during allergy season, or to see someone breath a sigh of relief like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
Chiropractic is incredible because I get to help people everyday with health problems they didn’t even realize they had. And I get to do it using nothing but my own two hands. Can their be anything more incredible than that?
