We recently connected with Alicia Walter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia , thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Art is life, and life is art. The sheer joy I experience as a creative is beyond words. Yes, being an artist has its challenges, but the satisfaction it brings is immeasurable. I’ve made the choice to prioritize peace over the pieces of myself.
For over two decades, I worked as an employee in various roles, from store clerk to administrative assistant, supervisor, and customer service representative. While I excelled in these positions, they didn’t fulfill me and often left me feeling drained. It was during a period when I balanced full-time employment with running my business that I realized my true passion lay in being a creative.
At that moment, I made a decision to show up for myself and embrace my artistic calling. This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of my husband, who has been my pillar throughout this transformative path. As well as the support of my parents, siblings, and beloved friends. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t knock anyone that has a regular job. What’s important is that you do what you love and love what you do!
I never imagined that my craft would be recognized and appreciated worldwide; from all over the United States to Japan, Australia, Africa, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. I never imagined that I would be writing, illustrating, and publishing my own books for children and adults. I never would imagine that I would be instructing others to tap into their inner artist. I never imagined that my art would lead me into acting in shows in Brooklyn, NY. I never imagined that I would be invited to join a fraternity for artists and creatives, Gamma Xi Phi! I never imagined that I would be living in Georgia and be selected for an internship that is black-owned with a focus on the arts and agriculture.
None of this would have happened if I didn’t have faith in myself and if I didn’t step into my purpose. I am truly humbled and grateful.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Alicia Walter, and my journey into the world of art and the creation of Art by AmW is a story close to my heart. Art has been an intrinsic part of my life from the earliest days of my childhood. It’s been a constant companion, a source of solace, and a canvas for self-expression. However, it wasn’t until later in life that I fully recognized the undeniable pull of art in my soul.
My path into the realm of artistry was marked by the realization that my true calling lay in the creation of art. That moment of self-discovery was transformative, and from that point forward, I’ve dedicated myself wholeheartedly to this remarkable journey.
Art by AmW, my brainchild, is a brand firmly grounded in the belief that artistic expression is a profound form of communication. I offer a diverse array of creative works, ranging from visually striking art pieces to thought-provoking written compositions. Every stroke of my brush, every word I put to paper, is an attempt to convey emotions, unravel stories that words alone could never encapsulate, and ignite the sparks of self-discovery and healing.
In addition to creating beautiful, wearable art, portrait wineglasses, and crafting custom gifts that carry a piece of my soul within them, I travel to instruct sip and paint parties, bringing the joy of art to diverse communities. These gatherings are an embodiment of the transformative power of art, a shared experience that nurtures creativity and connection.
What truly sets Art by AmW apart is our unwavering commitment to authenticity. My creations are more than just art; they are a reflection of my personal journey. I’m proud of the genuine impact my work has had on both individuals and communities. Witnessing the positive change it has inspired, whether in the form of self-love, healing, or compassion, is the most rewarding part of this journey.
So, for potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that Art by AmW is not merely a brand. It’s an experience, an invitation to immerse yourself in my world, to explore multifunctional art, and to participate in unique and engaging sip and paint events. When you engage with my work, you’re connecting with a piece of my heart and soul. I’m immensely grateful to have you as part of this artistic voyage with me. Together, we’ll continue to explore the profound world of art and creativity. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During a conversation with a fellow creative in my beloved hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, I shared my dream of becoming a full-time artist. Their response, unfortunately, echoed the challenges I might face, especially as a woman in the field and a African-American women. Instead of letting this discourage me, I decided to turn their words into fuel for the fire burning within me.
This pivotal moment marked the beginning of an incredible creative journey. I started by pouring my passion onto canvas, and then I expanded into the realm of wearable art, crafting hand-painted jackets, purses, and jewelry. The journey continued with the creation of portrait wine glasses and unique T-shirt designs.
Since then, my life has been a whirlwind of creativity, and I’ve never looked back. This story is a reminder that no one’s opinion should ever deter you from pursuing your dreams.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To best support artists and nurture a thriving creative ecosystem, support that artist in your family, your friend. Share their work with people that have an appreciation for the arts. Share on social media, go to their exhibits, shop at pop-ups that they participate in.
Diving a little deeper, society can:
1. Promote Art Education: Invest in early art education.
2. Financial Support: Offer grants and scholarships.
3. Accessible Art Spaces: Create affordable art spaces.
4. Community Engagement: Encourage local art interaction.
5. Supportive Policies: Protect artists’ rights and fair compensation.
6. Mentorship Programs: Develop mentorship for emerging artists.
7. Buy Local Art: Invest in local artists.
8. Cultural Diversity: Celebrate diverse artistic perspectives.
9. Foster Collaboration: Promote cross-industry collaboration.
10. Art Integration: Incorporate art in public spaces.
11. Art Therapy: Recognize the therapeutic value of art.
12. Online Platforms: Leverage online platforms for global reach.
13. Recognition: Acknowledge artists through awards and accolades.
These actions empower artists and enrich our culture.
