We were lucky to catch up with Alicia Pal-singh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Outside of being a mom my book “I see you ” is one of my greatest accomplishments. The excitement I see on a child’s face when I tell them I’m an author is priceless. The message in my book is personal to me, I wanted my son to know he can be anything he wants because I believe in him. Often the world tries to tell our children who they are and what they should be doing. I personally believe parents are the first teachers. We should encourage our children to work hard to achieve their greatest potential.
Alicia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My love for my son lead me to initially start writing poems about him which later turned into a book. I shared this love with my son before he could even walk. We would visit bookstores, and so many times we would have to search through so many books to find images that reflected him. I decided I would write a story that encouraged him and taught self-love. It’s important to me that my son knows he can be anything he puts his mind and efforts to. Often the world tries to tell our children who they are and not what they can be. My book is for all children who may feel as if they are not good enough.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission as an author is to uplift as many children as possible . I say this all the time but children aren’t encouraged enough to use their imagination and think outside the box . We live in a era where children spend more time with tablets and phones than their families. In the few minutes a child reads or looks at book , I want them to be empowered to dream big. So often the world tells our children who they are and what they should . My goal as author is to let them know all thing are possible.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an author is the look of surprise when I share my book with students . Some of the most memorable comments where “No that’s not you ” or “I want to be author too”! Children are very honest so when they say say they enjoyed my book my heart is filled. Selling books is great but having impact on just one child means the world to me.
