We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alicia Nikole. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alicia below.
Alicia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One deeply underappreciated facet of being an entrepreneur or creative is the kind of crazy stuff that happens from time to time. It could be anything from a disgruntled client attacking an employee or waking up to find out a celebrity gave you a shoutout on TikTok – the sudden, unexpected hits (both positive and negative) make the profession both exhilarating and exhausting. Can you share one of your craziest stories?
I was hired by a Music PR company thru word of mouth for an artist visiting Toronto. It was a last minute booking, and I was not told anything except the address of where to meet this client. I traveled to a downtown hotel, was escorted by the PR rep to the hotel room. I was slightly anxious as I had no idea what to expect or the expectations of me. The PR rep did hint that this experience could be a slightly challenging based on the clients demeanor and mood. I was escorted into the room, and to my surprise, was met with Rock Royalty, lead singer of the 1960’s band, the Kinks, Ray Davies. Having been raised on music from that decade, I immediately recognized him and quietly hummed in my head ” You really got me now”…
I was introduced to Ray, and for some reason, our energies collided and matched perfect, which put both of us at ease. I set him up for his grooming session and got to work. We chatted easily about his life, his music, and he relayed one of his craziest stories about taking a bullet in New Orleans to protect his friend.
This session was supposed to be a one-off session to get Ray ready for his live intimate music performance, however after our session, Ray insisted that I tag along with him for his day of PR and performances. We spent the day chatting easily and discussing rock star stories. He was one of the nicest people and most memorable experiences I have had in my career. I went from being anxious and nervous to being completely comfortable with Ray and able to give him the best session I could provide.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a freelance Hair & Make Up Artist with over 20 years experience in the business. My clientele ranges from brides, to friends to celebrities. I’ve worked in fashion, television, film and networks across North America. Many of the on-air personalities and talented actors have become devoted personal clients.
One of the most important things to recognize in this business is understanding what your client wants and creating their vision. My experience in this business, along with my passion and energy for creativity allows me to work closely with my clients and bring their visions to life – whether it be for their event or on a large screen for everyone.
What sets me apart is my constant yearning to educate myself on beauty evolution, whether it be the science behind products, industry or social trends.
I am proud to be a woman entrepreneur in this industry, how much I’ve taught myself and the relationships I cultivate with my clients.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the pandemic, with the industry shut down, there was no work to be found. Out of that I created CHRGD Apothecary. This was developed out of my love for natural healing and desire to offer thoughtfully sourced products with healing adaptogens minus the toxic ingredients found in our day to day lives. My line reflects my clean, uncomplicated approach to skin care and fueled by my passion to help people look & feel their best.
During this time when I couldn’t pursue makeup or hair artistry, this provided a creative outlet for me.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media has changed the industry dramatically. It has allowed me to reach a much wider audience, post my creations in real time and receive real time feedback as well. Social media is the new way of showcasing my portfolio as well as my growth and evolution in this business.
The tried and true “word of mouth” should never be dismissed. Give your clients the best service, execute their vision and they will tell everyone about how you made them feel.
