We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Nava a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Its very hard to choose a project that is the MOST meaningful. I guess that first that comes to mind is a short film that i have yet to release, And Then There Were Four. this was shot in the span of 48hrs with a group of friends and a budget of 5$. With this project i really just wanted to have some fun and have that translate on screen. And Then There Were Four, is a horror comedy about a group of girlfriends who are on a weekend trip when they get an unexpected visitor. I am super proud of this little film, so proud i have yet to release it. You can expect to see it August 2022.

Alicia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am local filmmaker, actor, comedian in the DFW area. I work independently on passion projects. Representation is so important me and making safe spaces for ALL women, allowing them to see themselves and be themselves creatively. I’ve had a love for performing and filmmaking all of my life. the process of putting together a film can be, stressful and sometimes feel impossible but In many ways that’s where the magic happens. I have never let my lack of resources stop me from creating something. I have two major projects coming out this year; LONG DISTANCE SUMMER and And Then There Were Four. I just launched the series, Im Running On a Tangent, as a co host on the Syl Abdul Inc YouTube channel, where I discuss hot takes and my love of all things movies.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
there’s a lot. There are SO many upcoming talents in your area. Go see shows in your local community theatre and I cannot stress this enough.. if you know someone who is putting out music, film, art.. anything. Give them a like or a view. It’s amazing how something so small can get someone so far. Creatives will put hours, days or even years into something. Show up for them by just viewing what they created. Now, if you’re looking to commission something.. pay them what you owe them. There’s too many people taking advantage of smaller businesses.

Have you ever had to pivot?
March 2020 really turned my entire life and career upside down. Like a lot of people who were trying to survive during a global pandemic, I nearly lost my mind. I had a lot of really big opportunities that i had built up to for so long and I lost every single one of them. The worst was that I lost just that spark that I had that let me enjoy the process of creating. I guess that spark was fueled by good health and a job. For two years I struggled with a lot of different things that I couldn’t control in my life even outside of the pandemic, it was hard, nearly impossible to create anything. BUT.. I just kept going, I had to take a step back and have faith. Slowly but surely Ive fell in love with my passion all over again. I look back and I am better now than I ever was.
Performing and making films is what brings me so much joy. From the beginning to the end, being creative is what makes life worth living. Im blessed to have friends that support me and believe in me. Truly thankful to God for placing this passion in my heart and the faith to keep going.
