We recently connected with Alicia Kay and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alicia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I first saw string art on Pinterest and it just captivated me. This was 10 years ago so there wasn’t any online tutorials or YouTube videos to learn from someone else. I pretty much studied different pieces to try and teach myself how the stringing process worked. The most essential skill when learning string art is patience. It looks easy but it isn’t, especially when you go into more complex designs. My biggest obstacle that got in the way of learning more was just time. As a stay at home mom, most of my time is dedicated to my children so I learned as much as I could and taught myself when I had the time.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been a creative person ever since I can remember. I began selling my art after having my second child. I wanted a way to make an income while also staying home to raise my baby.
The thing I’m most proud of when it comes to my artwork is just knowing that I’m creating something that people hang in their living rooms, bedrooms, offices, etc. and I’m adding something positive to their space. I truly believe that artwork can bring happiness into a home.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We lost our home in hurricane Irma due to flooding. This included all of my art supplies and everything I used in my business. I had built up so much from scratch over years of hard work. I had to overcome that period of life and rebuild again from the bottom. It hasn’t been easy but creating art means so much to me that it’s worth it.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is just to honestly bring happiness to people through my creativity. One goal of mine is to work with the elderly community as a creative. I’ve taken art therapy courses and the benefit of arts and crafts in an older age is extremely beneficial for their mindset, mood, and more.
