We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Gakima a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Probably when I was six years old. I loved film and was always so impressed with how actors on the screen managed to make me feel how they were feeling. I thought it was magical. I wanted to be able to do the same.

Alicia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Alicia. I’m originally from Burundi, but I grew up in the U.S. I went to an acting conservatory out here in LA and started creating my content after graduation. I have two comedic web series and a horror short under my belt so far. I’m currently working on another horror/thriller short. I don’t box myself into one particular niche. The freedom to create from any inspiration has allowed me to make projects I genuinely feel good about. My projects can be unpredictable at times which I think keeps the audience’s engaged and involved.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Initially on my journey my friends and I at the time would flirt with the idea of creating projects together, but nothing ever came from it. I realize that I was waiting on other people to want to work with me in order to start, because I wasn’t sure if I could do on my own. After a personal tragedy that had me reevaluating my life, I realized I couldn’t wait for anyone else to make my dreams a reality. If I truly wanted it then I was going to have to figure out how to do on my own. I produced, wrote, directed, all my projects. A few months after completing my first web series I had an opportunity to pitch to Fox Digital for their Bite Size Horror Shorts. They liked one of the episodes of my web series and invited me to pitch. I couldn’t believe it. Preparation led to an opportunity I could only have dreamt of.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Inspiring and encouraging people. I feel like if someone can see a character that they relate to, they may feel comforted and encouraged on their personal journey.
