Alicia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Nurturing Creativity: From Childhood Doodles to Self-Taught Mastery Embarking on a self-taught artistic journey has been a transformative experience for me, marked by observation, video immersion, relentless practice, and an unwavering attention to detail. As a child, my world was colored by doodles, drawings, and sketches. A fascination with architectural lines and intricate details emerged naturally, laying the groundwork for a lifelong passion. I was peculiarly drawn to the multiple church steeples, the majestic Cathedral, the atrium gates of my city in Puebla, Mexico. Constant practice with the use of pen and ink, hand exercises, and experimentation of applying details to my sketches were my beginnings.
Reflecting on my journey, embracing a more structured learning approach could have expedited my growth. Seeking mentorship or joining art communities might have provided valuable guidance, enabling a faster understanding of foundational principles. Having a formal art and design education was something I considered but did not pursue due to lack of resources and educated information or mentorship.
The childhood sketches instilled an innate appreciation for detail, a quality that later became integral to my artistic identity. The journey underscored the significance of several key skills. Patience emerged as a virtue, as progress in art is often gradual. Adaptability played a crucial role, allowing me to embrace new styles and mediums. Developing a discerning eye for detail became a cornerstone, elevating the quality of my work. Practice and observation are my foundation. From doodles to sketches I discovered my skill.
Navigating artistic self-discovery presented challenges. The absence of formal education occasionally left gaps in my knowledge. Overcoming self-doubt and seeking constructive feedback were hurdles that required persistence and a commitment to continuous improvement.
From childhood doodles to self-taught mastery, my artistic journey has been a dynamic evolution. The early fascination with architectural lines and details, coupled with self-directed learning, shaped my unique artistic perspective. While the absence of formal education presented obstacles, it also cultivated resilience and a deep connection to the craft. The synergy of childhood creativity and self-guided exploration has been instrumental in defining my path as an artist.

Alicia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A glimpse into my journey: I’m a self-taught artist hailing from the vibrant city of Puebla, Mexico, now nestled in the enchanting and welcoming city of Charleston, SC. My artistic illustrations comes to life through the dance of pen and ink, as well as the vivid strokes of acrylics. The essence of my creations is inspired by Charleston’s breathtaking landscapes, the gentle seduction of the Lowcountry, and the timeless Southern Charm that graces this city.
My artistic journey commenced with childhood doodles and drawings and a fascination for architectural lines. I was captivated by the elegant architecture that adorned my hometown. The transition to Charleston was a step into a familiar dream; its architectural intricacies felt like old friends. It was in this serendipitous meeting of worlds that I discovered my artistic calling. Absent formal education, I embraced self-taught methods, honing my skills through observation, practice, and deep appreciation for detail.
Seeking solace and purpose beyond the rigors of my role as an Accountant and the whirlwind of family life, I picked up my sketchbook. And just like that, my art journey unfolded.
Since 2010, I’ve been on a journey of crafting intricate hand-drawn renditions of the Charleston’s historical and iconic gates. A few years back, my desire to wield the paintbrush led me to the world of acrylics, where landscapes became my muse. This artistic odyssey evolved from self-discovery, moments of quiet prayer, and the wide-eyed wonder of a child, allowing me to perceive the world through myriad lenses. My aim is to encapsulate a harmonious blend of balance and symmetry. The stark interplay of black and white, coupled with the bold strokes of architectural lines, resonate deeply with me. Through acrylics, I envision moods that elicit emotions of joy, inspiration, and tranquility, employing a palette that dances between playful, vibrant, and soothing hues. My style leans towards impressionism, wherein I seek to encapsulate the captivating beauty that surrounds me.
Every artist is unique, a testament to our individuality. No two strokes of paint or ink are ever alike. In my creative realm, I draw upon distinct inspirations and emotions, shaped by my rich heritage from Mexico and Spain. This heritage shapes how I perceive and harmonize colors and shapes, achieving a delightful equilibrium. What sets me apart is the journey of self-teaching, of learning, discovering, and refining a skill that’s truly my own. I paint with the freedom to express what moves me or to capture the intricacies that hold personal significance.
I am proud of the humble journey and accomplishments along the way. I have been juried in to exhibit with:

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the humble thought that with our unique creations that start from a blank canvas, we can evoke beautiful emotions, thoughts, inspiration and connections. We can touch and elevate the human spirit, while at the same time promote causes for the future of art and creativity.
Creating art is a joyful experience that transcends and speaks to the human condition. It is a profound experience to see the reaction of people from all walks of life.
Creating bespoke artworks allows me to channel my passion and inspiration into every brushstroke, bringing unique pieces to adorn the walls of individuals. I take pride in building a legacy for my family and future generations, as art transcends boundaries of space and culture. Contributing visual creations to the world is a fulfilling and rewarding endeavor.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I often hear the statement, I am not creative! or I can’t draw to save my life! But honestly I think that everyone has hidden talents. I am a self taught artist. Everything I know today, I learned on my own. If you are interested in learning a skill, hone it, practice it and you might be surprised at the results.
During my creative journey I have learned to be courageous, to show myself and present my artwork to the public. I used to be an introvert and had to overcome this obstacle. Over the years, I have developed the confidence to shine. We also have to learn many skills of the business entrepreneurial world and wear the multiple hats demanded of us, nothing happens over night but through trial an error we develop skills in marketing, sales, technology, bookkeeping, strategy, planning and implementation, sourcing, events, promotion and so much more. It is a constant learning curve that demands adaptability and resilience.
For me the most important aspect is the ability to juggle everything I mentioned above with the numerous life roles. I am a mother and house-maker, a professional in Accounting with a full time job, and passionate Artist with the burning desire to do what I love full time. I have to set priorities with expectations, while giving myself enough grace to know that I have done all I could and met my demands and obligations with a full and grateful heart. It is hard work, but rewarding.
