Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alicea Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alicea , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am very elated as an artist! I keep thinking big! It keeps me going!! Where is the top when you have been a success over and again? The Sky is NOT the Limit is the title of the book God gave me! It’s filled with poetry along with a few title paintings! This is THE most rewarding job I have ever had. I take freedom over “job security” every time. It’s never about the dollars but I’m feel like I’m getting warmed up and I will give back to up and coming artist with supplies and knowledge! The mistakes I made are crucial, and to be a void in their journey hopefully! Nearly 20 years of artistry although, I have been featured in London magazines, Singapore, Miami, California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan and more I still have new things to offer, I am blessed and for THAT I am grateful!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a poet who began writing poetry in childhood, and have been successfully creating work for over 25 years. The Holy Spirit blessed me with mind shifting creativity that inspires inner healing and racial reconciliation. My paintings are conversational pieces for uplifting the thought-life and spirit!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I learned painting working for 12 hours most days! Being critiqued by jealous professionals when I was a newbie for months. When I accepted that I was blessed with creativity, I believed in my gift so I stayed the course. My artist group would paint and sell in between our work on canvas!! I knew I was never going back to corporate America for a living. That summer I was blessed to stay at my aunt’s house for free while I learned the skill. I had SO MUCH support I couldn’t turn around! I was sure that God chose me for this before I made a living, I had the freedom for the path as a creative almost the entire time, with the help of family and my husband.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can help with the business side by hosting a conference in every major city, every year… I may do this. The marketing landscape changes and we need to protect and insure our work (assets) from hackers with copyrighting our images and licensing our work to retailers for sure. There’s some more to share, I created The Grit and Grind of Book Publishing: workshop, I would love for the art world to a reality workshop!.
