We were lucky to catch up with Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ali, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Cold and Missing is the most meaningful project that I have ever worked on. Like a lot of people I have always had an interest in true crime and I wanted to create content about the subject. I also knew that I did not want to cause families impacted by true crime to have to relive their worst day. I wanted something to serve the families, and most importantly, the victims of true crime. That is how I landed on Cold and Missing. On the show we only cover cold cases and unresolved missing person cases. By focusing on these cases we’re able to keep the victims name in the public consciousness and let the families know that they are not forgotten. Since launching I have had the honor of talking with several families and getting to help tell their story in an honor of a lifetime. Darkness can’t run from the light and we intend to shine light everywhere.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski and I, along with my husband Eli Sulkowski, host the podcast Cold and Missing where we exclusively cover cold cases and unresolved missing person cases. I started this podcast because I would often spend my free time researching cold cases, But what good is that research sitting in a notebook? Cold cases and missing people need the public. Someone saw something or somebody knows something that could absolutely crack the case and bring home a loved one or deliver justice to a waiting family. What sets us apart from other true crime podcasts is the cases we focus on and the compassion and community care that supports the work.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to bring home missing people and close cold cases and give justice to waiting families. To do this we want to get the persons names and story out there as much as possible. I spend hours every week pouring over old newspaper articles and scouring the internet for information surrounding these cases and bring everything i find to our listeners,. I have no way of knowing what detail will spark a listener’s memory in talking about these cases so I want to give them all. Someone knows something. Someone saw something, That one little piece of information could change everything.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to provide a platform for families to tell their stories. We are always thinking of the victim and their families as we tell these stories and our audience can feel that. Our audience has mentioned that they love the respectful story telling and the lesser known cases we cover. Being able to provide a podcast that respects the victim and also engages the audience week after week is such rewarding work.
