We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ali Malmkar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ali, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
Family businesses can be tricky but I wouldn’t want to be in business with anyone else. My brother and I started Brewcado Coffee as a simple hobby and then decided to take the coffee roasting industry by storm. As anyone can imagine we have our ups and downs but luckily we have the understanding and respect for each other to take the time to listen. Listening to one another is one of the most important factors in running a business with your family. We are hopeful that one day our children will want to take on the family business and continue to add to the coffee legacy. We want to provide a safe space for our family to lay out all their creative ideas and give them a chance to be heard. We have found that we have some of the best and most successful ideas out of the times that we just sat down and listened to one another.
Ali, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are an Austin, Texas all organic fresh roasted coffee company called Brewcado Coffee. Brewcado Coffee is a family-run business that truly started all from the curiosity of how to make the best cup of coffee possible. While the brother-sister duo lived an entire ocean apart, they took their love of friendly competition to a whole new level of research and clean perfection. We decided to come together, take what we have learned, and finally put our knowledge to the test. We focus on all organic beans, and we focus on roasting our beans using hot air! We never roast in large batches, only small, to ensure that our customers are receiving the best quality from us. As you know our family is important, Brewcado’s name was imagined while playing around with our last name Mercado. We kept mentioning to each other that we were brewing ideas, always trying to be one step ahead of the curve. Then boom the name Brewcado was born. We have solely focused on making the perfect cup of coffee for 8 years, we’ve been in business for the past 3 years, and are excited to show our customers what great organic quality tastes like. Interested in all the hype? Go ahead and reach out for a bag or two. No amount of coffee is too much coffee in our minds.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We offer a Brew-Dash Program to all our customers. It is entirely free to those in the Austin area and a small charge for those outside. This program is that 1 day out of the week we focus on doing no-contact front porch deliveries. All our customers have to do is reach out by the middle of the week on their specific roast, brew method, bean, and quantity. We stay true to our brand and keep everything freshly roasted and customized for the customer. Our customer base for this program is those who buy coffee every week at their local market. Now we have taken one thing off their plate and delivered the quality that they deserve to be drinking daily.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social Media and word of mouth have been the most effective strategies for growing clientele. We have done everything from social media giveaways, and collaborations, and trying to participate in a large variety of farmer’s markets in Austin and surrounding areas. We have found that we are most successful with basic word of mouth, we know it takes time, but we have noticed that once we have a customer drinking our coffee, then we tend to have a customer for life.
