We were lucky to catch up with Ali Kasemkhani recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ali, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
There is nothing like being a creative mind. I am professionally a dentist and as the motto suggest it is the “art and science” combined. The art is how to approach the issue and the science is what needs to be done for outcome based on available references. Art is subjective and it is influenced by opinions and Science is objective and derived by data. As a physical healer, I use both these concepts meticulously to achieve the best outcome for my patient. When it comes to creativity, I use the same concepts to enlighten the viewers visual desire with my acquired senses for art. Before starting a film project, I always place myself in the passenger’s seat before taking the lead in the producer’s seat. In this situation I can sense what the viewer expects before painting the picture for them or tell the story.

Ali, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I never went to school to be a creative or artist. I learned the discipline by observing and paying attention to details. It is the details that makes the whole. My mission is always to help my environment. I never wanted to be a product of the environment, because in that situation, the individual is not using his/her mind to conquer the unachievable. Following someone or something, can limit the the power of your mind and this by itself is a negative impact on the individual’s existence or presence. My product is film and my subjects are “White Elephant in the room.” I like to push people’s boundaries through my work. Make them think beyond the main stream media that has limited people’s expression and thought process. I play with fire, and in this case, I always burn myself, to put a positive attitude in my Viewer’s mind through my visual art. Just like a candle; it burns to light.
I stablished my independent film studio, Frameception Pictures, in 2016 to make it as a hub for the underserved communities or individual’s in the valley so they can utilize it and create. It is a full service studio that can serve the needs of individual or groups from pre-production, production, and post production.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The society needs to give the artist “A Chance” to be heard or seen. Today, Unfortunately, our society is very well designed and motivated to only pay attention to certain individual’s to be misguided and follow others footsteps and get lost in the process. Every individual has a capability and energy in them, so giving him/her a chance would open the pandora’s box in the individual to unfelt capabilities.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The Holy Quran is my book; hardship and patience are my motivation.
