We recently connected with Ali Jubelirer and have shared our conversation below.
Ali, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a fun one – what’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Rather than explaining here, I hope it’s ok for me to provide this link – I think this is a really interesting topic and very divisive. https://www.rollingstone.com/culture-council/articles/how-pivot-your-cannabis-company-when-industry-challenges-come-way-1234839506/
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ali is a both a seasoned attorney and an entrepreneur, which is why she is known for her comprehensive expertise in guiding businesses through a variety of legal, regulatory and operational challenges. Her experience spans a wide spectrum, covering areas such as business transactions, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, labor and employment issues, operations, commercial contracts, litigation, intellectual property matters, and day-to-day business queries. Having worked both as an attorney and operator, Ali is known for expertly balancing legal risk with business needs.
Prior to joining Benesch Law, a full-service law firm, where Ali is Of Counsel in the firm’s cannabis practice group, Ali ran a law practice called Jubelirer & Eastman with another experienced attorney where she provided legal services to a variety of clients, primarily in tech, hospitality, and cannabis sectors.
Ali also runs a cannabis company called Dynamic Jack, which makes products that can be found online and on shelves in New Mexico. Dynamic Jack holds production, manufacturing and retail licenses, and operates on an outdoor farm sitting on 140 acres near Santa Fe.
Before launching both companies, Ali served as General Counsel to Revolution Cannabis Co., a privately-held multistate cannabis operator (MSO) based in Chicago. After leaving Revolution, Ali served as Outside General Counsel to a compliant cannabis payment processing company called Aeropay, and founded CannaMatch, a company connecting social equity cannabis licensees to trusted service providers. She also became a member of the Rolling Stone Culture Council, where she has published several articles on the state of the cannabis industry and her experience as an operator. Ali was recently named one of 2023’s Notable Leaders In Cannabis by Green Market Report and was also featured by her law school, Loyola Law, for her work in law and cannabis. She is a member of WINC (an executive women’s cannabis group) and The International Women’s Forum.
Prior to entering the cannabis industry, Ali spent almost eight years at Groupon in a variety of roles, ending her run there as VP & Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer in 2019. Before Groupon, Ali spent six years at Tribune Company as in-house counsel, and five years at Seyfarth Shaw LLP, where she concentrated her practice on employment litigation.
Ali received her B.A. from The Pennsylvania State University Honors Program and attended law school at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. She is a certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP) and also holds a Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR) certification. Ali regularly speaks on panels about the cannabis industry and being an
entrepreneur.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
This relates back to the article I sent you (ironically titled “How to Pivot” about jumping into the hemp D9 product space as a regulated/licensed operator who a year earlier would have said “no way.”
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
LinkedIn is your friend! This segways with fundraising (one of the questions in the drop down), most of which I did using LinkedIn. Everyone really gravitated to the idea of “attorney turned farmer” even though that wasn’t exactly the case, but I learned that the more personal the story is and the more you’re willing to humiliate yourself to some extent with pictures you’d rather not share and things you’d rather not say, the more people will follow you and ultimately learn about your business and maybe even invest in it…
