We recently connected with Ali Enache and have shared our conversation below.
Ali, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The single best investment I have ever made was putting the time in to create a body of work and investing in a booth at The Other Art Fair in LA (after being accepted). I applied very early into my art career having only sold several paintings and never created a cohesive body of work. But I was honing in on a style and I was ready to create my first collection. I had just moved to Los Angeles from Washington, DC and was eager to meet new collectors in the area, start a new local network and meet other artists. I thought if I could get in, this would be the perfect way to showcase my work to a new audience and get myself and my work out there in the Los Angeles art community. Little did I know that nine months later it would be my launch pad for a full time art career. Since The Other Art Fair last April and the doors it opened for me, I have sold over 70 paintings to private collections across the United States, participated in two more art fairs, released two successful collections on my website, and gained representation at two art galleries (Wallspace and Tappan Collective). I have learned that it takes some upfront financial risk and investment to follow your dreams, and certainly your own very hard work and time. But I also realized that with the right 0% credit card, loan or grant, you can make it happen for yourself.

Ali, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am artistic in every area of my life. Since my youth, I have always appreciated the beauty I see in all the arts from dance and theater to interior design and architecture, from fashion and design to traveling the world. There is a pure sense of grounding and peace I draw from all these beautiful pleasures in life. In my youth, I explored may artistic endeavors like classical ballet and jazz, painting and drawing, mosaics, basket weaving, as well as acting and singing. As a young adult, I turned my focus to graphic design, as it didn’t occur to me I could be a painter or artist for a career. Graphic design allowed me to wear an artistic hat, dive deep into color theory and learn the basics of managing client expectations. When the pandemic started, I picked up my paint brush again and never looked back. It was the missing piece on the road to becoming who I was. My artistic journey had started many many years earlier, but it was all leading to this moment. I rededicated myself to art with the goal of bringing calm, hope, and beauty into peoples homes, the way creating art brought me.
I create intuitive and minimalist abstract paintings on raw canvas with diluted acrylic paint. Through the use of multiple layers of acrylic washes and water, I embrace imperfections that occur during my process of experimentation and focus on creating works that feel balanced and calm. My work is unique because it is both simple and subtly complex. The layered washes on raw canvas allow the texture of the canvas to exude an organic elegance and raw quality that is calming and works well in many designer homes. A nice quality of my work is it is both impactful and serene, allowing the pieces to fit in nicely with many different designer aesthetics. I also understand interior design and design well from my ten year career in graphic design and working with clients. My appreciation and depth of understanding for color palettes, composition, and layout is extensive and I bring all of that into my intuitive paintings.
I am most proud of myself for building a successful art business online, following my dreams, and putting my work out there. For many, that can be the hardest part – showing your work and staying confident. I want my potential clients to know that creating art is necessary for me and that each and every painting has a piece of my heart of soul put into it. I work through every personal challenge through my art and seek grounding and respite through painting. My hope is for my collectors to draw immense meaning and calm from my work.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I was more educated as a young person about art programs at colleges, online business courses for artists, and the various career paths for an artist at a younger age. No one introduced me to these things. I had to discover and learn about them on my own and for so long I did not even consider art as a career path and only a hobby. It should be treated as any other career path (e.g. lawyer, doctor, etc.) where there are definable steps (depending on the artist path) a young person can discover and go after.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing the joy my collectors experience from having a piece of my art in their home. It brings me great satisfaction and joy to know I created a piece of art that brings another person peace, calm or happiness. I am supremely lucky to be able to do this as my job and career.
