Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alfonso Aguirre. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alfonso thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every project I’ve worked on is meaningful and I am grateful for every opportunity, but one that is very special is being a co-star on the last season of my favorite show, Better Call Saul.
I was invited to do a virtual audition back in April of 2021 and they called me three more times afterwards to do live auditions and self tapes. I wish I could accurately explain the excitement I felt – it was amazing!
In the end, I booked the fourth role and was flown to New Mexico to work with Giancarlo Esposito, who is a true artist and a very kind man. He gifted me his time and some invaluable advice.
I will never forget that!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I did some theater in High School back in Mexico, where I am from. My teacher said I had talent, but I only did it for the credits. I wanted to be a musician.
Years later, now in Texas, I decided to give acting a try and suddenly, I loved it. I signed up for classes at a couple of schools and eventually I landed my first agency, Page Parkes, which has been instrumental in my career. As I learned how to act for the camera and audition, I started booking commercials and small projects, and I realized that I was finally doing what I was called to do.
I am now represented by Page Parkes (my main agency), Evolve Artists Agency in Los Angeles and Model Management Group (MMG) in New York.
As I started booking jobs, I was asked to teach acting and auditioning techniques, as well as to share some of my experiences. Now, I love it. I teach in person and I have online students in New York, Florida, California, Texas and New Mexico.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2019, after a string of auditions that did not result in bookings, I considered quitting. I really thought about getting back to an office job that did not inspire me but would pay the bills. I didn’t want to, but felt that maybe acting wasn’t going to work out for me.
I pushed through and in 2020 I got an audition for a short scene in Red Notice, with Dewayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. This gave me hope and I tried my best. I didn’t get it, but my role in Better Call Saul last year was a very similar one.
Sometimes things don’t go the way we want them. They go the way they are meant to go.
In this business, you have to trust yourself, prepare and keep believing!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I started auditioning, I wanted to do things perfectly. I wanted to dot every “i” and cross every “t”. It took me a while to understand that perfect is boring. It leads nowhere.
It’s all about living the moment. And moments have mistakes, hiccups, flaws, but they are real.
In a world of pretend, effective actors make things look real. Not perfect. Real.
