We recently connected with Aleyzza Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Aleyzza, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Even as a young child I was always singing. It like when you take the first few bites of a yummy meal and start dancing in your seat is the same feeling that I got from singing. Growing up I was in a few choirs and loosely took vocal lessons, picking up tips along the way. I also was a band kid in grade school so music is something I’ve always been involved in since an early age.
Knowing what I know now, I wish I hadn’t shied away from diving more into music when I got to college. I would’ve have taken advantage of the resources in school and had tried to find a community in the arts. I would’ve honed in on learned skills like vocal endurance and taking care/building my voice.
Building self-confidence and trusting my gut is one of the most important skill when trying to learn more in music. Not that you have to feel this way 100% of the time but being self aware that the most important person on your team AND who is in your way is yourself.
Aleyzza, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a queer latinx singer-songwriter based in Washington, D.C. who found strength through creating music and strengthening my creative persona. I started singing from a young age, finding influence from a wide range of storytellers such as Alicia Keys, Jessie Reyez, Dolly Parton, La India, Lido Pimienta and so many other female creatives. I kicked off my music career doing backup vocals for artists such as NoLa, Brooklyn the Kid, Lola Villa, and also creating commercial music for VIACOM Inc & Blaze Unlimited. This inspired me and gave me the courage to start recording my own independent music. In early 2022, I featured in my first collaboration releasing the heart-struck duet single “La Luna” by Brooklyn the Kid ft. LAY sending listeners to daydream about wild, young queer love. I also found an amazing community with organizations such as the Curvy Artist Collective and the 247 Artists. Since then I have continued to release music in English and Spanish and collaborate with other incredible artists from all over the world!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the people that you meet and the community you create with others. The music industry is small so meeting other creatives that are passionate about their work and are going through similar hurdles is always is super cool!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of the resources that has truly impacted my journey in music is the 247 artist community (@24sevenartists on IG). They have a library on free resources and monthly zoom calls with big names in the industry. The team and community that this platform has given me, I can’t recommend enough to others!
